The pandemic has accelerated the web traffic for illegal piracy sites. From January 2021 through September 2021, global demand for pirated content skyrocketed, according to a joint report by Akamai Technologies, a CDN and cybersecurity firm, and MUSO, a data company that measures global piracy.

India had 6.5 billion visits to piracy sites like Movierulz, Ibomma, Tamilmv, and Tamilrockers tamilyogi. which is the third-highest in the world. The report, “State of the Internet,” also found that there were 67 billion visits to TV content pirates sites, which is 50% of all such visits. Manufacturing, publishing and films follow with 30-, 14.5- and 10.8-billion visits respectively, while software is close with nine billion (7%). A separate study by Digital TV Research estimated that for over-the-top media service providers in India this year, piracy will result in a loss of $3.08 billion. Globally, online streaming piracy will cost $52 billion this year according to a report.
