Christmas is a joyous time; families come together, and bars and restaurants roll out events and promotions to make the most of the holiday cheer. Speaking of events, how about three rounds of Trivia?

Grownups, how about getting in on the action and seeing if you’re smarter than a fifth grader with this Christmas trivia?

1. How Far Back Does the Christmas Tree Go?

Answer: 16th Century

The Christmas tree became quite popular in Britain’s Victorian era, but it first appeared in Germany. Devout Lutheran Christians introduced the tradition of bringing trees into your home and decorating them. Martin Luther was the first to add candles to a tree and set it up in his main room. How’s that for tradition?!

2. Which Day Did “Jingle Bells”Originally Celebrate?

Answer: Thanksgiving

That’s right, all you merry folks! The famous anthem “Jingle Bells”wasn’t originally meant for Christmas. Notice how it has none of the Christmassy words in it, like “Santa Claus”and “Jesus,”and not even so much as a reference to the “holy night.”It originally came out as a Thanksgiving anthem in 1857 called “The One Horse Open Sleigh.” It was so popular that it was sung again during Christmastime; the rest is history.

3. When was Jesus Born?

Answer: Your Guess is as Good as Ours

You don’t have to be smarter than a fifth grader to know that Christmas is a celebration ofJesus Christ’s birth. As for his birthday, we all assume it’s December 25 because the Roman Catholic Church says so. However, it’s their word against all the others claiming a different date. Perhaps that’s why Christmas, too, is celebrated on different days in various parts of the world.

4. How Far Back Does “Xmas”Go?

Answer: 16th Century

The word “Xmas”is not a modern-day abbreviation despite bearing a resemblance to the modern tendency to shorten everything into anagrams and whatnot. The letter “X”in the word looks like the English alphabet, but it’s actually the Greek letter “X,” pronounced “Chi,”in the word “Χριστός“and pronounced “Christos”in our alphabet. Combine “Christos”(Christ) with the “mass”(-mas), and you get “Christmas”!

5. Which is the Most Recorded Christmas Song?

Answer: “Silent Night”

“Silent Night”remains the most recorded song in history, with over 137,315 versions. However, “White Christmas”is hot on its heels with 128,276 versions. No other song, not even “Jingle Bells,”with 89,681 recordings, comes close to these two reigning champs.
