These kinds of COVID-19 diagnostic tests were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States:

Test by RT-PCR. This COVID-19 test, which is also known as a molecular test, uses a laboratory method called reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to find the virus’s genetic material. A long nasal swab, also known as a nasopharyngeal swab, is used to extract fluid from the back of your nose by a healthcare provider. A shorter nasal swab (mid-turbinate swab) or a very short swab (anterior nares swab) can be used to collect a sample. A long swab, known as an oropharyngeal swab, may be inserted into your throat by a healthcare provider in some instances. To obtain a saliva sample, you could also spit into a tube.

Test for antigen. This COVID-19 test detects certain virus proteins. Obtaining a fluid sample with a long nasal swab, some antigen tests can yield results in minutes. Others may be sent to a laboratory for examination.

When the instructions are followed carefully, a positive antigen test result is regarded as accurate. However, there is a greater risk of false-negative results, which indicates that it is possible to be infected with the virus but receive a negative result. The healthcare provider may recommend an RT-PCR test to confirm a negative antigen test result, depending on the circumstances.
