This month, we will be focusing our attention on cushion covers. I wanted to give you a closer look at how to make cushions covers for outdoor furniture.

Lazy Susan has a wide selection of outdoor cushions, all specifically made to fit on our various styles of outdoor benches and chairs.

They are weatherproof, and the covers can be removed easily and washed in the machine.

This post focuses on cleaning and maintenance of outdoor furniture cushions . I won’t repeat it. You can remove the fabric from the foam pads using a zip. This allows you to wash, repair, and refresh the material as needed.

You can also tie our outdoor cushion collection to fit perfectly on any of our Lazy Susan seats, benches or chairs.

Even if the wind picks them up, they won’t blow off or slip off while you’re sitting on top of them. This is an important aspect that many people overlook when buying or making new.

This post will be more about making your own.

While I am confident that we have a quality product in an array of great outdoor colors, you might want to add your own personal touch to our furniture.

Some of our cushions may still be in good condition. However, the covers may have started to wear.

Do what they say and make do!

Trends in outdoor fabric

Even in my ten-plus year tenure in the outdoor furniture business, outdoor fabric has made great strides.

A whole new market has emerged for outdoor soft furnishing, including outdoor rugs, drapes, and sofa-style cushions, as well as day beds and daybeds.

Sunbrella and other brands have led the charge in technical innovation and on-trend textile design. This has made fabric quality leaps and bounds.

There is a growing demand for outdoor living spaces that are as “liveable” as possible as we spend more time indoors (especially in 2020).

The UK has always been behind the curve in outdoor living. We simply don’t have it. This has changed dramatically over the past few years. We want to bring in the inside and vice versa.

Better products make it possible.

Many interior furniture manufacturers now use outdoor textiles to create pieces for our homes, which is a huge leap in our industry.

Perhaps Lazy Susan has been a bit safe. Our cushion collection is based upon what sells. We are constantly looking ahead, but who’s to say that will not change.

You can also make your own covers if you want to be more in line with a trend.

It doesn’t matter if you are a master at thread and needle, just as long as your machine can make straight lines, you’re good.

There are many great how-to videos I have shared in this article, which even help beginners like me achieve amazing results.

Cushions are quick and simple to make and can brighten up any patio or garden furniture.

Slip stitch Method for Outdoor Cushion Covers

Slip stitch is an invisible seam. This is especially useful when closing up holes in pillows and stuffed toys. To give a neat finish, slip stitch is sewn from outside of seam.

It is also permanently closed. This is the easiest method we’ll examine today, if that’s not an issue.

Envelope Method for Outdoor Cushion Covers

This video and method will help you get started with sewing. You can remove the envelope cushion covers and put them in the washer if you need them. However, they do not require sewing the zipper. Jann Newton, Newton Custom Interiors’ sewing tutorial, demonstrates how easy they can be made.

Close Cushions Outdoor Cushion Covers

The button-close rattan furniture cushion covers are another popular finishing option. To make a statement, I recommend using brightly colored buttons. Debbie Shore demonstrates how to create beautiful shabby chic covers.

Zip Close Cushions Outdoor Cushion Covers

Treasurie has a great video that shows how to make a zippered cushion covering that beginners can sew. For a tight cover, cut two pieces of fabric equal to the foam insert pad. If you prefer a looser cover, add 1/2 inch seam allowance.

This video is intended for people who have these skills, or those who want to push themselves. It’s meant to be fun. A little practice can bring out some amazing results. You shouldn’t be afraid of trying new things. Before you buy a more expensive outdoor fabric, get some unbleached cotton to test out.

Online Fabric Store shows you how to make a box-style cushion that can be used for garden seating.

Last but not least, Patricia from Living Even Keeled has this amazing video that shows how to make outdoor cushion cushions using glue and velcro.
