Swiss miss History
Swiss Miss Instant Hot Cocoa was originally created by Sanna Dairies in Wisconsin during the early 1960s who were also known to manufacture instant dry milk. Sanna Dairies was then bought by Beatrice foods in the 1960s. In the 1970s, Swiss Miss replaced the hand-drawn Swiss Miss mascot with a claymation figure. Around 1986, Swiss Miss revamped its packaging to a style more similar to today’s packaging with a blue Swiss Miss logo and mountaintops in the background. The claymation Swiss Miss mascot was also replaced by a picture of a real girl.
Later the girl was removed and since then, there has not been a Swiss Miss mascot on a package. Beatrice Foods was bought by ConAgra Foods in 1990. Around 2006, Wallace Church updated the logo and design of the packaging with special designs for different purposes such as marketing to kids with Marshmallow Madness.
In 2010, the packaging and logo were refined once more. Sometime in 2018, Swiss Miss redesigned its packaging once more with a much cleaner design along with a change in recipe and amount of hot chocolate in a packet Charles Sanna, the creator of Swiss Miss, passed away at the age of 101 in March of 2019.

Can a dog eat Swiss miss chocolate?
A Swiss Miss is mostly powdered milk, sugar, etc. The only thing toxic is the actual chocolate in the package, which would probably not be very much. It would help to know if it is dark chocolate or milk chocolate. Milk chocolate is not as dangerous as dark. She will probably be fine. The most you might see is some vomiting and diarrhea. Please let me know what else I can answer or help with. I will see if I can find a Swiss Miss ingredient label online, and get back to you if I am more concerned.
How Much Hot Chocolate Powder Can Kill a Dog?
The amount of powder that can cause severe illness or kill your dog depends on its weight and the cocoa concentration in the powder. Lower-priced, poor-quality or white varieties of chocolate are typically less deadly for your dog, but you should always keep a close eye and err on the side of caution.
- White chocolate contains less cocoa powder than other chocolates. Anything over 200 ounces per pound of body weight can prove to be extremely harmful.
- Milk chocolate is more common in households than white chocolate and is much more dangerous. Only one ounce per pound can be deadly.
- Baker chocolate is just as dangerous as milk chocolate, if not more so. Just one ounce per pound can be harmful. Almost every instance of baking chocolate ingestion should be considered an emergency.
- Sweet cacao powder, cocoa mix, or dark chocolate is the most dangerous of all chocolates. Since it has such a high concentration, 0.3 ounces per pound is extremely dangerous for your dog.
Every dog is different, so the guidelines listed above can shift depending on your dog’s existing health conditions and weight. The reason that chocolates with high concentrations of cocoa, especially cocoa powder, are deadly is due to theobromine’s presence. The more pure cocoa means the more theobromine, and our canine friends cannot metabolize the chemical as well as humans can.
What Happens When a Dog Eats Hot Chocolate Powder?
A dog’s inability to metabolize theobromine puts immense pressure on its nervous system and kidneys. As a result, you might observe the following signs of chocolate poisoning, listed by VCA Hospitals:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Restlessness
- Increased urination
- Drooling
- Hyperactivity
- Pacing
- Panting
- Elevated heart rate
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures
It can take up to 6-12 hours for symptoms of chocolate poisoning to appear. In more severe cases, older dogs or those vulnerable to heart defects can go into cardiac arrest and die soon after. Extreme cases like these are why you should never risk feeding chocolate to your dog, no matter the amount.
Some dog owners may use it as a small treat after training and walks or share it with them during an afternoon snack, both of which are extremely dangerous. Even if you’ve had close calls in the past after your dog ate some hot chocolate mix or a stray candy bar, it’s best not to test fate.
