Halloween Has Roots in Samhain
Samhain is an old Celtic festival dating back hundreds of years and is observed on November 1st. People then weren’t creative enough to carve pumpkins and hang fake skeletons because plastic wasn’t a thing yet. However, they did the next best thing. They wore costumes (get it?) and lit bonfires to keep the spirits away.
Fast-forward to the eighth century, and Pope Gregory III made November 1st All Saints Day, retaining some of the Samhain traditions. The night before that was called All Hallows Eve. As time passed, the night before instead of the day became more popular. People started calling it Halloween, and the rest is history.
True Events Inspired A Nightmare on Elm Street
There’s A Nightmare on Elm Street for every generation. In the rare case that you missed the latest remake, the movie is about a group of teenagers who start seeing a burnt corpse of a man with knives for fingers called Freddy Krueger in their nightmares. The catch: they aren’t nightmares so much as Freddy pulling them into his world to kill them.
The idea of dreams having that much control over your existence is terrifying, but it may also be real. The original movie’s director Wes Craven was inspired to make this movie after he read a report in the Los Angeles Times about some teenage Khmer immigrants who died in their sleep after having nightmares.
Fact is Bloodier than Fiction
While the makers behind the first Friday the 13th movie have denied taking inspiration from real life, they might have encountered a certain event in passing. Buckle in, folks, because this one’s a doozy.
The setting is Finland in the 1960s—roughly two decades before the first movie was released. Two teenage couples went on a camping trip to the very lonely Lake Bodom. In the movie, a similar group visits the isolated Crystal Lake.
The next morning, all but one boy were found stabbed to death inside the tent they had set up. Upon regaining consciousness, the boy told the police that it was an unprovoked attack by a man in black with bright red eyes. Unfortunately, there was less closure in real life than in the movie.
On the bright side, this might have inspired the movie, which inspired Kid Corona’s newest quiz. Check out other Kid Corona trivia while you prepare for the popular Halloween trivia game.
