The origins of the Akal Takht can be traced back to 1577 when the fifth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, had a bunga or pavilion constructed on the Harmandir Sahib premises. It was here that He collected the holy scriptures and installed them in the new building.
