For the people here, Patriot Day is one of the most significant days of the year. It is observed on September 11. So we would suggest that you read the blog right from the beginning to the end so that you get to know about every important thing about “September 11.” Here are a few more things that you should remember while celebrating Patriot Day.
What is actually Patriot Day?
Now, Patriots’ Day is one of the most important days in the books of the US. It is the very day when the terror attack of 9/11 happened in the country. Since then, the entire country keeps aside this day for the honor of all the victims of the attack. You might also hear or see this day as September 11th or the attack of 9/11.
But there are so many things that happened on this day. People who were working like a normal day- not just those but from around the attacked places also faced death helping others.
Although the attack was done on 9/11, the US government declared it a national holiday on 18th December 2001. And the same has been happening for the following days and would be the same for the days to come.
What actually happened on 9/11?
Till now, we have just referred to September 11 as a haunting day due to the terror activities that happened in the US. But here is how things went so that you can understand the quantum of fear, sorrow, and helplessness that people felt on the day.
Note: All the timings are taken from authentic websites.
At 8:46 am EDT- American Airlines Flight number 11 collided with New York’s skyscraper “World Trade Center”, bringing the building down to dust (but that happened a bit later). This attack was done at the North Tower.
At 9:03 am EDT- United Airlines Flight number 175 also collided with the World Trade Center but this time it was the South Tower.
At 9:37 am EDT- American Airlines Flight number 77 collided with another important building of the country “The Pentagon.”
At 9:59 am EDT- With the impact the entire World Trade Center South Tower collapsed to dust.
At 10:03 am EDT- United Airlines Flight number 93 crashed in the Shanksville region of Pennsylvania.
10:28 AM EDT – This was the time when the World Trade Center’s North Tower collapsed and was brought to dust.
These horrific events happened in such quick succession that not the government, not the officials, or any other person was able to understand or know what was going on. There were only three dominant things spread across the country; fear, terror, and sorrow.
What do the people of the country do on this day?
As we have already discussed that people show their gratitude and respect towards those who lost their lives to terrorism. Apart from this, there are a few events that take place at multiple places. And there are a lot of attendees each year. It is declared a holiday on this day and people remember and commemorate those who lost their lives in the attacks. And also for the ones who lost their lives helping others.
Here is what you will see that happens in the US on this day every year:
- There are many ceremonies that take place in different places on this day throughout the US. That’s one way to celebrate sorrowful events.
- People observe the day with silence and commemorate the people who died and those who gave their lives trying to save others.
- In many places, people commemorate the deaths at the exact time that we have listed above.
- There are many people who donate things to organizations working for the betterment of people.
- Although this is a forever mantra, people especially spread happiness and do the work of kindness on this day. This way they not only show their gratitude towards humanity but also try to set examples for others.
- There are multiple activities that are performed at many places in such a way that it shows spreading hope to the people.
- People also remember those who died on this day. The family members visit their graves and offer prayers and flowers to them.
- People also wear custom long sleeve shirts and other attire to show their condolences, respect, and honor towards those who lost their lives.
Even today, it still feels so fresh and haunts a lot of people so it is better to bring harmony and peace around yourself in society.
When and where did this happen?
Not only the US citizens but the entire world witnessed the cruelty and terror that the entire country faced. Patriot’s Day is observed every year on September 11 due to the massacre that happened on the same day in 2001.
The entire country came under shock because there were three heart-throbbing events that took place in three different regions of the US. The terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York; then the same thing happened at the Pentagon in Virginia, and the third thing was a crash landing of the United Airlines flight 93 in Pennsylvania.
All these three disastrous events happened simultaneously on September 11, 2001, at three different locations. And it left the citizens of the US completely stunned.
Conclusion
This date in the US and many other dates in several other countries are observed for the same reasons. Terrorism has taken a toll on people of many countries and many innocent lives have been taken away due to this. We believe, that to make this world a better place to live, one has to keep a check on a lot of things.
And our ending note; it is important to bring peace to the world so that no more days like these are seen anywhere in the world. It not only brings sorrow to the families who lose someone to such events. But if something of this magnitude happens, it’s the entire country that gets sorrow. If you visit or are going to the US during this time, do stay back and work how they do.
