In the spring of 1938, a young family man earning 17 cents an hour at Eastman Kodak Company felt that he needed to boost his income to sustain his family. He did this by working weekends at a little roadside stand near his house in Webster, NY, selling hot dogs and soda pop.
Bill Gray was the young man’s name. On weekends, Bill and his wife Alberta worked up to eighteen hours a day to keep their young firm afloat. Bill decided to go into the restaurant industry full-time four years later after generating more money on weekends.
he did at his full-time job at Kodak. This is the tale of how Bill Gray’s Penfield, Bill Gray’s Greece Restaurants came to be.
Good Things Started To Happen Now
Good things started to happen now that Bill and Alberta were able to devote all of their attention to their modest restaurant business. They were able to increase the size of their restaurant, introduce additional menu items (such as ground beef sandwiches, cheeseburgers, and French fries), attract a large number of new customers, and add several family members, totaling eleven children!!
Bill Gray’s succeeded and grew over the years while offering great Bill Gray’s Penfield, and Bill Gray’s Greece customer care. Until 1959, the Gray family ran the business from its original location on Ridge Road in Webster. They later relocated to the “Round-Up,” a larger, more modern facility on East Henrietta Road in Henrietta.
Henrietta restaurant
Bill left Henrietta Bill Gray’s Penfield, Bill Gray’s Greece in 1963 to work for Bruce Hagedorn, a long-time friend, and Webster neighbor.
Bill and Bruce teamed up in 1965 to form Bill Gray’s Incorporated, a partnership, and corporation that opened a fresh new Bill Gray’s Restaurant on Route 104 in Ontario. Bill opened a second store on Culver Rd.
in Sea Breeze the following year. Bill, Alberta, and many family members worked for the following twelve years to make Bill Gray’s one of Rochester’s most popular restaurants, based on the same commitment to quality and customer service that Bill Grays established in 1938.
Third Facility On Hard Rd
With fame and fortune comes the desire to expand. Bill Gray’s opened its third Bill Gray’s Penfield, Bill Gray’s Greece on Hard Rd. in Webster in 1978, just a few hundred yards away from the original Bill Gray’s. Bill Gray’s added (and sometimes removed) sites during the next thirty years, and it now has 16 locations in the Rochester and Buffalo areas.
Bill Gray’s Penfield, Bill Gray’s Greece took considerable interest in the company he founded in 1938 throughout the years. Although Bill and Alberta are no longer alive, their entrepreneurial spirit lives on in the company’s family, owners, and employees.
