When George contacted us to make her move from Bilbao to Mungía, she was a little doubtful about the transfer of her most pampered piece, a mini greenhouse. Paula, as a lover and collector of nature, was afraid of how we were going to transport plants in a move without affecting their leaves, their flowers or losing the substrate. Her concern was in charge of our movers, who knew how to combine her txapela with a gardener’s overalls. How did we do it? She continues reading and discovers why George blindly trusts Leader Removals… Preparation before transporting plants in a move.
We know that the plants of home are part of its environment, its energy, and, for a long time, of our dedication. Although we must be aware that not all plants can go in a move since they would put themselves at risk and would not resist certain factors.
We understand it, the task of deciding which one to leave is complicated, either because of its large size, because of the space that you will have for them in the new home, because of the climate they will face and living conditions, because of the legislation to enter plants to the new country (given that it is an international transfer) or for the hours that will last inside the truck. – However, there are options to say goodbye to the largest ones –for example–, but still, take them with you on your move.
An alternative for them to support the route is to take cuttings from the stems and put them in containers with water, this technique is only applied to some species of plants. – Another way to reproduce your favorite plants in your new home is to plant the stems in temporary pots with a moist substrate; however, it is vital that you research the type of plant and the method of cutting, caring for, and transplanting your cuttings.
Necessary care to transport plants – Are the pots heavy?
You can reduce the weight and make it easier to maneuver the plants by moving them to temporary plastic pots at least two weeks before the move so that the plant does not receive so much stress or disturbance at the same time and spoil it. –
On the other hand, the plants that will migrate in their respective pot deserve prior protection. In this order, botanists recommend pruning them and cutting off the dry parts (leaves and branches) a few weeks before moving. And, remove the pest and dust, as well as water and spray the plants a day before the move so that they do not wither.
Botanical Warning! If you water them the same day of the tour, they can break during handling, because when you spray them, their leaves harden, making them more susceptible to breakage. For its part, you should bear in mind that those with the largest foliage are the most likely to be mistreated along the way.
How do pack plants transport them?
Now yes, it’s time to put on the apron and gloves, let’s start with the preparation of the mobile garden! For this, you will need strong packing tape (enough), newspaper or Kraft paper, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, and plastic or rigid cardboard boxes (if not reinforced). Let’s start…
1. First, the small pots with plants with scarce foliage. For them, look for the packing adhesive, lift the leaves carefully with a pair of tweezers and cover the substrate with sections of tape, so that neither the plant nor the sand is released. Make sure that the adhesive is very well attached to the edges of the pot and that the substrate remains sealed and does not dirty the plant. You can cover the part of the plant that is exposed with a glass or plastic container according to its size and that does not deteriorate it.
It is important that you make small holes in the container so that it can breathe. Next, fix the container to the pot with adhesive tape and cover the entire edge, so it will not come off.
Once your little plants are secured, you can group them in a cardboard box and, between the empty spaces, place balls of newspaper so that they do not dance or come out on their journey. To finish, put the lid on the box and label the container with the magic word: FRAGILE.
