“You all come to us young people for hope. How dare you? You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words” – this is the famous statement made by Greta Thunberg to world leaders at the 2019 UN climate conference in New York.

In 2018, Greta Thunberg became popular when she protested outside the Swedish parliament at a young age of 15. Because of her efforts, more than 20,000 students have joined her protest for the environment through the means of skipping classes. Her efforts were able to reach different parts of the globe and the youth were encouraged to organize their own campaigns in dealing with climate change.

In 2019, Greta Thunberg received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for climate activism.

Climate Change as a Serious Threat

Climate change is a serious threat to the entire Earth including all the species within it. The atmospheric temperature is continuously rising without a stop. Because of this, glaciers are melting which, in turn, causes the sea levels to rise.

Recently, three islands have already disappeared due to the rising sea levels. A central Pacific island nation known as Kiribati is slowly being engulfed by the rising levels of seawater. The people of Kiribati are worried that if the water does not stop rising, they would have to face the reality of having to relocate for safety.

Unfortunately, human activities are still continuously causing this dire situation.

With this, people, especially the youth, should understand and make a move on this slow murder before it is too late. Students should support environmentally friendly schools in order for change to happen. Schools like these are including environmentally sustainable actions in their day-to-day activities and are teaching the youth on the importance of change and the repercussions of climate change.

Overall, let us be like Greta Thunberg and do what it takes to save our only planet.
