Headache caused by a Neck problem

There are many types of headaches. One of them is Cervicogenic Headaches. This pain may feel like a migraine to you. The first difference between migraine pain and cervicogenic headache is that a migraine begins in the brain region and the cervicogenic headache is associated to the base of the cervical spine or skull region. A cervicogenic headache is characterized by moderate pain and a dull feeling, but sometimes the intensity of the pain can be very high. The first symptom of CGH is usually side locking. This means it occurs on one side of the neck, head and face.

Some headaches are caused by eyestrain, stress, fatigue and trauma. Most often when a headache occurs, you can find the cause, but cervicogenic headache is different because it is caused by problems with the nerves, muscles, and bones of the neck.

Cervicogenic Headache is a secondary Headache that is triggered by a physical or neurologic condition. This headache can also be caused by trauma such as a fracture, dislocation, or a neck injury. Along with this, it can also be a sign of any medical condition such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cancer and infection. This pain first starts intermittently and later turns into constant pain.

 

Cervicogenic Headaches Symptoms:

Following are the symptoms of this pain affecting from neck to head.

  • This pain occurs in the back of the neck, forehead, around the ear.
  • Pain occurs on the same side in the shoulder and arm.
  • Due to this, the flexibility of the neck decreases.
  • In some cases, there may be swelling of the eyes and blurring of vision.
  • Cervicogenic pain affects the neck and head on one side, but in some rare cases, it can affect both sides.
  • Cervicogenic headaches are usually triggered by abnormal neck movements and postures. Along with this, it can also be caused by sedation movements during coughing and sneezing.
  • Cervicogenic headaches can range from low to moderate and severe intensity.
  • It affects many parts. Starting from the back of the head, it goes to the scalp, forehead, around the eyes, around the ears and so on.

 Unusual symptoms of Cervicogenic Headache:

  • Increased sensitivity to sound and light
  • Dizziness
  • Swelling of the eyes and affected area
  • Pain on both sides of the head and neck
  • Sensation of pain when touching the head and face during a severe attack of CGH (Cervicogenic Headaches). The reason for this can be an injury in the Trigeminal Nerve.

Panchakarma for Neck Pain and Headache

  1. Greeva Basti for Neck pain-

Greeva Basti comprises of two words – Greeva and Basti that translates holding something in the neck.

Procedure – The procedure of Greeva Basti is to lie down a person’s face down on the massage table. Then the dough is prepared out of black gram flour or whole wheat flour and it is made into a small ring of four to five inches in diameter that cover all the vertebrae of the neck and 2-3 vertebrae of the thoracic region. To make it leak-proof, glued it with some amount of water then lukewarm medicated oil or the decoction of herbs is slowly poured into it. When this cools down it is squeezed out and replaced with the warmer one.  At the end of the procedure, the dough is removed and a gentle massage is given over the area. The total duration of the procedure is about 30 minutes after that a person is made to take rest for a while.

  1. SHIRODHARA for Headache-

In Ayurveda, Shirodhara is a classic therapy which includes pouring of warm herbal oil on the forehead in a continuous stream. The term Shirodhara comes from two words “Shiro” meaning ‘head’ and “Dhara” meaning ‘stream’ that is considered as Bahiparimarjanachikitsa, or external treatments in Ayurveda.

Procedure –Shirodhara treatment begins with Abhyangam. The person has to lie down on the table with closed eyes and relax the body. Before starting the treatment, eyes and ears should be covered with clean cotton to prevent the entrance of oil in eyes and ears. The procedure starts with the pouring of about 2 liters lukewarm oil continuously as a stream on to the forehead in an oscillating manner. The time duration of Shirodhara may extend 45-1 hour depending upon the condition of a patient.The therapist may also give a mild Shiroabhyanga during this procedure. After completion of the procedure, the head washed with lukewarm water and remove the cotton from the eyes and ears and clean that area with a clean cloth. The patient should be advised to avoid dust, sunlight, cold, and wind for a short while.
