When it comes to your household move, you need to make sure you have everything ready before the moving day. You want to avoid last-minute scrambling, which is why you should take inventory of your household items now.
So how will you know what things you should list down? Before calling the moving company, check out the below list, with all its eight main categories.
- Kitchenware
Start by making a list of all the kitchen items you have that are fragile or expensive. You should include casserole dishes, plates, glasses, cups, serving sets, and pans in this category. If you have any other items for cooking or dining purposes, be sure to include them as well. It’s also best if you can take photos of these items.
If you think that this is the only time you will be moving, it’s recommended that you buy disposable or inexpensive kitchenware. Of course, if possible, it’s best to leave the good stuff for your next move.
- Electronics and Appliances
Electronics like laptops should also be listed, as should any functionally connected appliances, like your microwave oven or blender. Remember to include the power cords, too, if these are separate from the item you will be listing.
- Home Decorations
What about paintings, family heirlooms, bookshelves, and other things that make your house look nice? These fall under the category of home decorations. You should also include other items such as lamps, storage units, and mirrors. So long as these items aren’t electronics or appliances, you can consider their household goods.
- Clothing and Shoes
Your clothing and shoes are counted as part of your household effects, too; this is regardless of whether they’re formal wear, workout clothes, or casual clothes. If you plan on selling your clothes and shoes to fund your move, you shouldn’t include them in the inventory list.
- Personal Effects
This category includes personal items like makeup and shaving kits; things like photo albums and books can be included too if you feel like these are personal items. These are the only things you need to have in your inventory list if they’re not automatically covered by other categories already.
- Bedding and Linens
Don’t forget to list down all of your beddings and linens, including pillows, quilts, mattress pads, sheets, blankets, and the like. If you have your bed frame and headboard, be sure to include them too.
- Kitchen Utensils and Dinnerware
Don’t forget about kitchen utensils and dinnerware when making your list. The things that belong in this category are smaller than those in the kitchenware category, including knives, silverware, plates and bowls, casserole dishes, and serving utensils.
- Other Household Goods
Anything else that doesn’t fit in any of the other categories can be considered part of the household goods you will transport to your new home. You might have lamps or candles that don’t have power cords; these can be listed too.
Remember that these lists are only to help you make your inventory; they don’t cover everything. You might still want to use a blank sheet of paper and create a more comprehensive list on your own. That way, you will know what items will need to be included when moving day comes.
