How to Grow Grass Fast.
There are many types of grasses for different uses, for example, some are best suited to play on, whereas others work well as lawns. No matter what type of grass is desired though they all require the gardener to grow it. If you want to know how to grow grass fast then read on.
Step 1: Prepare the soil before planting your seeds or turf by double digging or deep rotavating. Remove any weeds and ensure that the ground is free draining. Make sure that there are no stones left in the ground either as this can heavily damage machinery if not picked up during digging work carried out beforehand.
Step 2: If you are growing a lawn then use a quality lawn seed mix. Don’t over-fertilize, that can do more harm than good.
Step 3: Turf should be laid in a layer of no less than 5cm and by using a weed barrier cloth underneath to prevent weeds from entering the lawn and disrupting the growth cycle. If grass does not grow well in your area then consider laying artificial turf instead. This will provide many years of play quality and save you hours on upkeep throughout the summer months.
Step 4: Water daily for at least 10 minutes once the ground is dry enough to leave footprints when walking across it. Ensure grass has full access to sunlight too which means mowing regularly if it’s a lawn, or removing any shading that may affect its growth.
Step 5: To get the best results from your growing space, consider installing a sprinkler system. This will ensure that grass has everything it needs to grow and that no time is wasted moving hoses around the garden, as well as reducing water bills too.
How to grow grass without a seed?
It’s easier than you think, so don’t buy seed.
You can grow grass without seed using turfgrass that has already sprouted and is actively growing in your lawn. This is called vegetative or sod-type grass. You can find it at sod farms across the country during the summer months (May – July).
To use these sods to regrow your lawn:
- Dig up an area of your lawn where you want to lay the new grass; make sure it’s larger than covered by the sod pieces you are about to lay down or else they will die out quickly due to not getting enough sunlight.
- 2a. Using a shovel, peel back several layers of grass until you reach dirt/subsoil.
- 2b. Using a sod cutter, remove a piece of turfgrass about 12″ by 12″. A sod cutter is a very sharp knife that cuts through grass and soil with one push.
- 3a. Lay down the new grass pieces on top of the peeled back lawn area using half of them facing up and half facing down to fill in any sunken areas from the removed turf layer.
- 3b. Cover it all with dirt/subsoil and water well for 30 days (1 inch per day).
- 4a. After 30 days, unseal the edges of your lawn so any grass seedlings can grow into existing unsealed holes or reseed other thin areas not covered by sods.
- 4b. Sealed areas should have new grass growing within one month, while unsealed areas may take up to three months.
