The Achilles Battle Fleet Book Review
“The Achilles Battle“; the first novel of the Mei-Ling Lee Trilogy Narrated by Harmony Zhang is a military history, and sci-fi book. With a cast of military characters from ancient times to modern day, The Achilles Battle makes an excellent addition to any library. As with any good stand-alone title, the author does a good job of building the characters and developing an interesting plot.
A couple of things set this novel apart from others in its category. First, it takes an unflattering look at the military and the way it uses the power and authority to manipulate and control people. Second, it offers an alternative view of a military officer’s view of war and peace. In this case, a retired navy lieutenant Colonel writes an interesting series of vignettes that depict both victories and defeats throughout history. These are not the typical military science fiction epics; most readers are used to. Rather, these are realistic accounts of how real military officers view events and try to evaluate if they should be involved in war.
An Epic Collection: Ancient Wars and Naval Officers
This collection is part of a series of books on ancient wars and naval officers. In this one, the author chose to take the viewpoint of a former junior-grade officer who was posted as a commodore to the Chinese shoal, mooring an ancient warship in the Sunda Strait. While there, he comes across some locals who sided with the Americans. Naturally, all of the Chinese were hostile to America and wanted to secede from America to form their own country, but the future lieutenant Colonel wrote about how he persuaded his superior, Rear Admiral Richard Montgomery Smith, to allow this to happen.
He takes us back in time to the early days of the twentieth century where a former president, Theodore Roosevelt, tries to bring peace to the Pacific theater of the World. But while he is busy dealing with the internal problems of the US, Japan still attacks Pearl Harbor on June 2nd. As this struggle continues, the story pulls at the reader, just how a military clash between two powers could change history.
In discussing the United States versus Japan at the time, the author also mentions a rather interesting statistic: only six percent of the United States Navy were law students. It’s a telling statistic that the United States military, which prides itself on its martial arts ability to protect the American people, is a major student body of one of the biggest martial arts schools in the world. The author did a great job of describing the culture and mindset of the military and how it differs from that of regular military personnel. He does a good job of explaining that the United States military is not as cut-and-dry as we have been led to believe.
Much of the book covers the cultural reasons why the US became involved in the First World War. It also takes a close look at how the US Navy changed when Japan went after Pearl Harbor. The author covers ancient philosophy and the concept of honor, while he goes into the role of Mei-Ling, or senior officers, in the Japanese Navy during the war. The author also talks about the role of the junior-grade officers who are called Shirin, or swordplay experts, in the Chinese military as well as how they dealt with the Americans.
The Achilles Battle Fleet: A Military Science Fiction Novel
The Achilles Battle Fleet series is an excellent military science fiction novel. The author has succeeded in creating a cast of characters that are all compelling. The author describes how the American effort to defeat Japan changed the way that martial arts were taught in the US Navy. There is also a great deal of historical information that is interesting. One thing that the reader will learn is just how much of this type of information was prepared by both sides prior to the outbreak of war.
This Military History book is something that anyone interested in military history should put down and read again. Those not interested in military action will also find this book interesting. The author has created a story that tells us a bit of history but shows it from the perspective of a military expert. Those not in the military will enjoy this exciting and thought provoking read. The reader will learn many new things and enjoy the overall story.
