Leader of a religious sect in Texas
His adoptive father (Sam Shepard) is the leader of a religious sect in Texas, regarded as a prophet and savior. His real parents were also members of the sect; Sarah (Kirsten Dunst) left the sect or was kicked out, and Roy (Michael Shannon) left the sect two years later and was kicked out when he kidnapped Alton and took him hunting. With the help of Roy’s childhood friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton), the family embarks on a desperate journey to help Alton find out who he is, with the sect and the federal government (aided by the curious NSA analyst Adam Driver) going after him across the nation.
Dirt and shotgun stories
This film is very different it is the latest work of Jeff Nichols, who is now officially one of my favourite writers and directors. I haven’t seen his other film Take Shelter (at the time of writing), but after seeing The Mud and Shotgun Stories, I began to understand his directorial style – and fell in love with him in Midnight Special – but if I hadn’t understood and related to his style, this film would have been very different for me. You could say that he always leaves exposition in his films, and this is his best film.
Story details and just selected
We are told almost nothing, but some things are seen and summarised. This film has a pre-history and explanations about things that are never explained to the audience. Nichols knows this and his actors know this, but we may never know. This is the kind of thing that would bother me if it looked like lazy directing, but since I know that Nichols knows all the details of the story and just chose not to include some of them (because it would have been too difficult to include them), it works and even becomes a big plus.
The tone of the film is very dark
It has become one of the things I look forward to in his films; it encourages me to discover the details I missed and to use my imagination to fill in the blanks myself. His films make you think, but more importantly, they make you reflect. They are so interesting that I want to discover more, and then more – unexplained details and clues about what is yet to be discovered. I don’t think this style will appeal to everyone, but I find it enjoyable. The tone of the film is very dark: it’s dark and sombre, it’s serious and intense, it’s rich and quietly sublime, always accompanied by intense inner emotions.
It’s serious and intense
Depending on how the film starts, it tends to be too dark and serious, rather than allowing time to build up and gradually involve the viewer. It is easy not to get lost in the dark currents and depths. But once inside, there is no turning back. More than once I felt my heart pounding with excitement and mystery, which is not often the case, even in very interesting and mysterious films. I was completely and irreversibly entranced. If you want your film to be consistently melancholy, but with intense emotion on the surface, you can’t do better than casting Michael Shannon in the lead role.
The next best commentator is Adam Driver
He’s appeared in all of Nichols’ films, but of course he’s there not only because of his friendship with the director, but also because the roles he plays allow him to use his unique qualities and abilities. With a deep face that seems to draw darkness, Shannon Roy strikes a balance between suggestiveness, tenderness and desperation. She fits Nichols’ script exceptionally well, and her serene facial movements are something to admire. The next best observer is Adam Driver, whose disarming charm makes him easy to believe, even when working for antagonists. His scenes are the closest to comedy in the film and provide a relaxing break from the menacing chaos of other scenes.
At the same time and the heart of the film
Jaden Lieberher shows up as an old soul (played by St. Vincent), which makes Alton particularly uncomfortable. He’s quirky and charming at the same time and is the heart of the film. Joel Edgerton didn’t have much script material, but he still made an excellent impression as a caring, loyal and calm partner. Kirsten Dunst is still not a fan of mine, but she portrayed motherhood with just the right dose of distance and insecurity. One of my favorite things about the science fiction genre is how well science fiction elements can be used as metaphors for real life and to enhance the real drama of a story.
The effects of this film are incredibly realistic
Nichols takes full advantage of this feature and doesn’t overload the film with sci-fi special effects charm. The effects in this film are incredibly realistic, incredibly beautiful, and most of all, they are only used to enhance the story they surround. Midnight Special is a family drama that focuses on characters and relationships as a family finds itself in an unnatural struggle against the odds. Midnight Special is an achingly beautiful and touching film, full of heart and served up with a reworked Spielbergian wonder. Director, unless you see a very specific view of it
The ambiguity of the plot is deliberately designed to let the story run its emotional course, but this has a side effect: some will find it confusing or incomplete (it took me five days to unravel the ending in my mind). I would suggest that these people simply don’t get the film that way. This film is so clearly told through the eyes of the director that unless you see his very distinctive vision, it makes no sense. I’d like to say that this strange and atmospheric genre film is worth watching, but it would be closer to the truth to say that it is a very personal and special film that not everyone will like. And that’s one of its best qualities.
