Cows are very important to society as they provide milk for us. We are going to talk about 2 different types of cows, A1 and A2 are the most common. These two breeds have some major differences in their genetics that effect what type of milk they produce.

Many people don’t know the difference between A1 and A2 cows. These two types of cows produces different milk that can be differentiated by color, taste, and effect on human bodies. In this blog post, we will discuss the types of cows and how their milk differs.

The first thing we should know is what they look like – they are both black and white milk producing animals but their appearance is slightly different. Secondly, we should know how these two types of cows differ from each other so we can tell them apart when we see them out on a farm!  Let’s take a look at these two different types of cows and how we can differentiate them.

  1. 1. A1 cows have a large and pink udder compared to A2 cow’s small, tight udder. A2 cows also have a higher body fat percentage than A1 cows  Therefore, A2 cows produce more milk per amount of food they eat. This results in A2 cow’s having thicker teats than A1 cows (teats are the part of the udder where the milk comes out). The thickness means that A2 cow’s milk is much easier for humans to digest due to its increased protein content making it less acidic and therefore much sweeter on your tongue!

  1. 2. The next difference we can see between A1 and A2 cows is the colour of their urine. A2 milk contains a protein called A2 beta casein which is responsible for making A2 cow’s urine a yellowish brown instead of A1’s green/dark green. A1 (Friesian) cattle have been bred to produce more milk so they will be either mottled or pink-eyed. A2 cows have white coats without any patches; this was also why A2 was once known as “white” in some parts of the world!

  1. 3. A1 cows are much larger than A2s (An A2 cow is 12-15 hands or about 11.5 – 13 metres tall) whereas A1’s are between 15 and 16.3 hh. A1 cows have 8 stomach compartments and A2s only have four. A1 cows have 30 mcm in the rumen and A2s only 12 mcm.

The size of the liver is much larger in A1 cows and they can hold about 20 litres of bile, while the A2 cow has a maximum capacity of around 7.5 litres. The liver is an active organ producing. A1 cows produce 29 kg of methane whereas A2s, only 3.5 kg. A2’s produce greater quantities of the anti inflammatory molecule, Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and their meat is lower in fat content than that of an A1 cow.

  1. A2 cows produce less milk than A1, but they seem to have been the original European cow and so their genes haven’t been selectively bred as A1’s have. They also live longer than A1 cows; A2s will often live until 20 years old while A1s die young because of all the health problems that come with being a dairy cow!

  1. A2 cows are very healthy and A1s have all sorts of health problems, A1 milk does not come from A2 dairies. A1 cows also produce far less meat than A2s. A2 milk is considered by some to be a healthier and more digestible product. It has been shown in studies that A1 milk can cause inflammation similar to gluten sensitivity in humans – the only difference is that it doesn’t last for as long, however this is enough time for your body to react against A1’s.

  1. It has been found that A1 milk can cause inflammation similar to gluten-sensitivity in humans, however A2’s do not have this effect on a human body. A2’s are easily converted into A1’s when digested by our gut bacteria, which affect how they are absorbed and metabolised within our bodies.

A2 Milks don’t require any extensive processing before they get to you and contain vitamins C, E and A as well as more of those calcium-rich micro-nutrients! Just think about it – if you like A2 milk but don’t want the repercussions from drinking A1 then drink A2 instead! It’s healthier for your tummy, heart and soul – while A1 A2 milk is the only A-grade A-milk.
