What is Counselling
- In general, counselling psychology is the field of science that deals with helping, guiding, directing and facilitating all those who are in trouble.
- Psychoanalysis basically involves two people, one who assists and one who needs assistance.
- The first is called a counsellor and the second is known as a patient.
Role of Counsellor
- The counsellor has several roles to play. At times, he can act as a guiding teacher or facilitator who provides an optimal environment for others to facilitate growth and development.
- Psychoanalysis is not just the combination of a therapist and a patient, but it involves establishing a relationship between the two.
- In analytical psychology, there are various approaches for counselling (Freudian, experiential, behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, etc.)
- A counsellor can choose any approach according to the needs and problems facing her client.
- They do not implement the counselling approach that is easiest for them, but rather that meets the demands of clients’ problems.
- Counselling psychology largely considers the individuality of clients. There are always differences in individuals and each individual is unique.
Steps for Counselling
This involves four steps:-
1) Establishment of Relationships:-
- Before the counsellor can begin to find a solution to the clients’ problem, it is very important that there is a warm and caring relationship between the two.
- It is entirely up to the counsellors to make it work. The ability of counsellors to build a strong relationship depends on their consistency.
- The consistency of the counsellors signifies their quality of being real, genuine and honest. They should not pretend or fake her feelings and ideas about her clients. Unconditional positive regard is the other quality that a good counsellor must have. This means accepting the client as he is, without making judgments.
- The counsellor respects the client regardless of their behaviour or actions. Empathic listening by the counsellor is also an essential element of the counselling process.
- Empathy means “feeling with the client”. This is different from sympathy in the way that sympathy leads to self-pity, which is a negative approach; while empathy means that the counsellor can feel the condition of the client and this serves as a source of satisfaction for the patient that there is someone who is experiencing the same feeling as himself.
2) Identification and Evaluation of Problems:-
- After establishing a good relationship, the counsellor and the patient should try together to discover the problem that the patient is facing.
- Having identified the problem, the counsellor would like to know what the client’s real problem is.
- Then, for this, she administers various psychological tests to evaluate her hypothesis.
3) Planning for Problem Solving:-
- Planning to solve clients’ problem is done according to the test results.
- It is the counsellor who is actively involved as the counselling process draws to a close.
4) Solution and Interpretation:-
- Little by little, the analyst fined the solution to the problem. The main role in this step of the analysis is that of patience.
- Once the solution is found, the process ends, but it is the patient’s choice to continue or stop the process. The patient can go to the analyst whenever he wishes.
