Asia Cup is one of the biggest cricket tournaments and is the only continental championship in the game. The tournament began in 1984 with just three teams participating in it. In the inaugural edition of the competition played in the United Arab Emirates, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka were the participants.

Since then, the tournament has only become better and better with each passing edition. To date, 15 editions of the tournament have been played. India is the most successful side in the history of the competition, having won it 7 times followed by Sri Lanka and Pakistan who have won it 6 and 2 times respectively.

Asia Cup Man of the Series list:

1984: Surinder Khanna

Former India player Surinder Khanna won the Asia Cup Man of the Series award in the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup. Khanna finished the competition as the highest run-scorer. He scored 107 runs with the help of two fifties in addition to picking up 2 wickets. Khanna was the only player who scored more 100 runs in the tournament.

1986: Arjuna Ranatunga

Former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga was the Man of the Series in the second edition of the Asia Cup. The World Cup-winning skipper finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer as well as the joint third highest wicket-taker. In 3 games, he scored 105 and picked up 4 wickets.

1988: Navjot Singh Sidhu

The Man of the Series award for the third edition of the tournament went to former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu. The former India batsman scored three fifties in the competition including one in the final. He was the second highest run-scorer in the competition, scoring 179 runs at an average of almost 60.

1990/91: 

The Man of the Series award was not awarded in the 1990/91 edition.

1995: Navjot Singh Sidhu

In 1995, Navjot Singh Sidhu became the first-ever player to win the Man of the Series award in the Asia Cup twice. The former top-order batsman finished the tournament as the second highest run-scorer behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Sidhu ended his campaign with 197 runs at an average of almost 99 with the help of 3 fifties.

1997: Arjuna Ranatunga

In 1997, Arjuna Ranatunga became the second player after Navjot Singh Sidhu to win the Asia Cup Man of the Series award twice. The Sri Lanka great ended the tournament as the highest run-scorer, scoring 272 runs with the help of 1 century and 2 fifties.

2000: Mohammad Yousuf:

In 2000, former cricketer Mohammad Yousuf became the first-ever Pakistan player to win the Man of the Series award in Asia Cup. He walked away with the prestigious award after playing a key role in Pakistan’s triumphant campaign. Yousuf was the the highest run-scorer in the 2000 edition of the continental championship, scoring a total of 295 runs with the help of one century and a couple of fifties.

2004: Sanath Jayasuriya:

Former Sri Lanka skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was the Man of the Series in the 2004 Asia Cup. The opening batsman, who was known for his aggressive batting style, finished the tournament as the second-highest run-scorer behind Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik. Jayasuriya scored 293 runs with the help of 2 centuries. He also picked up 4 wickets.

2008: Ajantha Mendis:

Ajantha Mendis was the Man of the Series in the 2008 Asia Cup. The former Sri Lanka spinner earned a huge reputation through this edition of the Asia Cup as he blew the opposition away with his mystery spin. He finished the competition with a record 17 wickets to his name, helping Sri Lanka win the title. His best performance came in the final when he picked up 6 wickets for only 13 runs against India.

2010: Shahid Afridi:

Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi was the Man of the Series in the 2010 edition of the Asia Cup. The hard-hitting former allrounder finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer, scoring 265 runs with the help of 2 centuries. With his leg spin, he picked up 3 wickets.

2012: Shakib Al Hasan:

Bangladesh great Shakil Al Hasan scripted history in 2012 when he became the first player from his country to win the prestigious Asia Cup Man of the Series away. Shakib played a huge role in Bangladesh’s historic march to the final where they lost to Pakistan. Shakib ended his campaign in Asia Cup 2023 as the fourth highest run-scorer, scoring 237 runs with the help of 3 fifties. With the ball, he picked up 6 wickets.

2014:  Lahiru Thirimanne:

Former Sri Lanka batsman Lahiru Thirimanne was awarded the Man of the Series award in 2014 Asia Cup. The southpaw finished his campaign in that edition of the competition as the highest run-scorer. Thirimanne scored 279 runs in 5 matches with the help of 2 centuries including one in the final against Pakistan.

2016: Sabbir Rahman:

In 2016, Sabbir Rahman became the second player from Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan to win the Asia Cup Man of the Series award. It was a historic competition as the Asia Cup was played in the T20 format for the first time. Rahman finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer, scoring 176 runs in 5 games.

2018: Shikhar Dhawan:

In 2018, Shikhar Dhawan became the first Indian player since Navjot Singh Sidhu in 1995 to win the Asia Cup Man of the Series award. The opening batsman finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer, scoring an impressive 342 runs in 5 innings.

2022: Mohammad Rizwan:

Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan was the Man of the Series in 2022 Asia Cup. The wicketkeeper-batsman finished the tournament with 281 runs in 6 matches with the help of 3 fifties. Rizwan’s performance was one of the biggest reasons behind Pakistan’s runner-up finish in the tournament.
