Some schools prefer classroom tables while others prefer desks. It was not long ago that classrooms had student desks. A lot of teachers preferred that each student have their own space. However, the teaching strategies have changed and this has led to furniture arrangement and furniture types in schools to change. Chalkboards are being replaced with whiteboards while whiteboards are being replaced with smart boards. Whether the teacher prefers it or not, desks are being replaced by tables. Whether you long to have a classroom full of desks or a classroom full of tables, there are always ways to make what you want work for you.
Desks
In a classroom with over 25 students, desks can be cumbersome. Thankfully, there are a few ways that classrooms can be arranged and accommodate a lot of desks. The first thing is to line the desks up in rows in the centre of the classroom. Keep in mind that whilst this will have everyone facing at the front of the classroom, it may not be a great option for group work. It is important to consider your instruction methods and the other small group areas around the classroom before committing to this setup.
You can also place the desks in groups. Turn the desks to face each other and arrange them in groups. The group size depends on the available space and the number of students in the classroom. You can mix up the students into groups based on their unique skill levels and behaviour.
In short, all the high-level students shouldn’t be placed in the same groups whilst all the low-level students shouldn’t be placed in another. When planning your school furniture, balance each group the best way you can and keep in mind the makeup of the groups can easily change.
Tables
You can also buy small tables and arrange them in groups to accommodate four to six students. Having tables tends to take up fewer rooms than desks. However, tables also have their drawbacks as there is no way you can separate students’ work areas during test time. You can solve this problem by using a privacy shield or any other barrier that allows students to remain focused on their work. This is helpful if the students need time to concentrate.
You should arrange the tables around the classroom for students to move easily. Students should be able to push the chairs out without any difficulty and there should be a path to the door in case of emergencies. Use desktop organizers for storage. Students can place their belongings in an organized place within their reach but out of the way of other learners.
Different seating
Whether you invest in school tables or school desks doesn’t really matter. While the setup of your classroom will differ depending on the available furniture, the same instructions will take place. If you don’t have the right furniture, don’t let it stress you. Students won’t remember the desks or tables they will only remember all they learned.
