In the United Kingdom, there is a rule that you need a certificate to drive your car. This certificate is called a MOT certificate. It is given after the successful completion of these tests. This blog discusses the multiple checks in the MOT test and why they are essential for roadworthiness.
An MOT is an annual test that can be done after the third year of vehicle registration to ensure the safety, condition, and roadworthiness of your car. It was introduced in 1962 by the Ministry of Transportation in the United Kingdom. Initially, when it starts, they can check only three components of your vehicle including the tyres, brakes and steering wheel. However, They want to reduce unroadworthy cars, so they expanded their checking level and added many components, including noise, exhaust system and many others. At the current time, it is categorised into nine different categories. These components are as follows:-
Steering And Suspension:-
Both are interlinked with each other; Steering is responsible for the handling and stability of your car, and the suspension absorbs all types of shocks and vibrations during driving and helps to provide safety and comfort to the car passenger. They check for damages, cracks, and functionality issues during the mot test. The examiner checks all the parts of these components, including the corroded and worn-out parts, such as the steering axle and chamber and their fluid levels of suspension and steering. They also inspect oil leakage and the efficiency of the steering. They check different suspension parts, including struts, shockers, ball joints and linkage.
Tyres and wheel
Tyre and wheels are among the most critical components of your vehicle; they are the only components responsible for your car’s handling, stability and performance. During the mot test, the examiner checks all the damages, including the punctures, bulges, cuts, cracks and faults on the valve. The examiner checks your tread depth and all the conditions of the tyres. They check all the parts of a wheel also including the wheel alignment and balancing, some of the electronic equipment is inspected in these tests like, the tyre pressure management system(TPMS).
braking system:-
The brake is a main component of your vehicle. The examiner checks your various parts, including the brake pad, pedal, fluid, hammer and disc, They check your brake pedal and pad length and width and fluid levels of the brake. They check all types of brakes, including handbrake and their different electronic components, which measure the efficiency of your brake, including the Anti-Brake system(ABS) and Electronic Brake System(EBS). They inspect your brake efficiency by driving your car on the rolling wheel equipment.
light and electronic system:-
During these tests, the examiner inspects various types of lights in your vehicle, including the front, rear, hazard, brake, dashboard and indicator lights. They check your light damages, faults, functionalities, cracks and scratches on the light. They also check various electronic equipment, including the batteries and their connection to different components of your car. They check the voltage and current transmission from the other components.
Exhaust And Fuel System:-
The exhaust system filters the fuel pollutants and expels them from the tailpipe. When you do your MOT Plymouth checking, then the examiner checks your exhaust system and fuel system, In the exhaust system, they check all parts of the system, including the tailpipe, catalyst converter, smoke dense and how much it releases the smoke. Not only these, They check the different parts of the exhaust system problems, including damages, leakages and corroded parts of the exhaust system. On the other hand, If you talk about the fuel system, check your fuel tanks and all transmission hoses check all the corroded parts of the fuel tank and inspect all transmission hose leakage and faults.
Driver View From Seat:-
In these tests, the examiner seats in the place of the car driver, they check the visibility of your car and all the essential components which are important for the roadworthiness of your car. They check various components, including mirrors left, right and driver mirrors, they check your windshield glass issues like scratches, cracks and one of the main visibility of the car. Check all the parts of the windscreen like the wiper and their rubber size and range of the wiper.
Visual components and other items:-
The rest of the inspection checks your outer visual components, like doors, windows, chassis number, number plate, seatbelt and horns. They check all the functionalities and the different issues, including corroded parts and the faults of the components. In the doors checking, they check all doors of your vehicle. They inspect whether your front door is open from both inside or outside and back door is open only from the inside. On the other hand, in the window, they check the visibility and functions of the window.
