Program Eligibility and Deadlines
Interested candidates are required to be nominated by the institution at which they want to study. It is to be noted that candidates cannot apply to the Vanier CGS program directly. They need to verify with the administrator about the institutional internal deadlines at the nominating institution before applying. The Vanier CGS nominations are forwarded by multidisciplinary agency-specific peer review committees to an inter-agency, independent selection board. The Vanier CGS recipients are selected by this board.
The nominations that do not meet the eligibility criteria of the scholarship program will not be accepted. There are different eligibility criteria for the citizens and permanent residents of Canada and the citizens of other countries. The eligibility criteria for the candidates applying for degree programs have specific requirements, including the need to be a holder of doctoral awards with a significant research component. Notably, only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding.
All of the prior doctoral-level studies are considered in the evaluation of eligibility. The students who have not studied on a full-time basis or who had interrupted their studies with the university’s official approval must highlight the dates of interruption or part-time study in the Special Circumstances attachment.
The federal government employees of Canada are also eligible only on the condition that an unpaid leave of absence is taken (no salary or special allowance is permitted).
ResearchNet is the online application package management system with the help of which all the applications are submitted to the Canadian institutions. Those Canadian institutions are held in charge for putting forward their nominations. It is to be noted that ResearchNet allows the creation of only one application per applicant.
Multiple applications are also allowed and eligible candidates are permitted to apply to the Vanier CGS program and other doctorate-level or fellowship programs in the same academic year. The only condition provided is that the research proposed in each application falls under the mandate of the federal granting agency where the application is submitted.
