Kids love dressing in book week costumes for adults during book week. It is also no secret that putting together a costume every year can be daunting. Whilst coming up with ideas for book week costumes, it can be hard to assemble an easy and cheap costume. Make the most out of your PVA glue and focus on recreating the colours of the characters. Adding a few accessories that match the book goes a long way to make your costume stand out.

We have put together some of the most popular costumes this year. Each costume can be assembled quickly with no stitching. So whether you are someone who likes to prepare during the last minute or someone who plans ahead, take a look at some of the top costumes to try on book week.

The very hungry caterpillar

To make this costume, you will need green cardboard in two shades, yellow, red and green sheets of craft foam, purple pipe cleaners, scissors, black twine, and PVA glue. You should assemble it by cutting two large circles the size of a dinner plate from every shade of green cardboard. The circles will form the body part. Line up your circles in alternating colours and thread them together with black twine. Now make two holes in the top circle. Leave excess twine. Tie these together around your child’s neck at the back to attach the body of the caterpillar.

If you do not want to buy costumes online, you can make the head of the caterpillar yourself by cutting two green ovals and two larger yellow oval shapes to form the eyes. Now glue them to a rectangular piece of craft (red) foam cut to about fifteen centimetres high and thirty centimetres across. Now attach two pipe cleaners to the top to make the antennae and secure it onto the child using elastic.

Making the paper bag princess costume

To make this costume, you will need an empty toilet paper roll, gold washi tape, twine, masking tape, a thin headband, scissors, an optional plush toy dragon and a roll of brown wrapping paper.

Cover the toilet paper in gold washi tape and cut small triangle pieces from the top to make a nice crown shape. Attach it to a headband using your masking tape to secure it. Cut a length of wrapping paper that is double the ankle to shoulder height of your kid. Fold in half and then cut a semi-circle cleanly in the middle to act as the hole for the head to pass through. This will form the basis of your dress. After your kid is ready to wear the costume, pop the dress over their head and cut the extra length off each side. Secure with twine properly tied in the shape of a bow around the waist of your child and tape either side to make a dress. Now, add dragon for an extra level of beauty.
