Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal is a name that needs no introduction in the Indian mountaineering world. He is a third-generation soldier and a pioneer in the field of mountaineering. Born on 26 December 1975, in Badhori of Samba District in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, he completed his primary and secondary education from the Army School, Ratnuchak. He always dreamt of joining the army and followed his father’s footsteps, who was a retired soldier.
Colonel Jamwal’s journey in mountaineering began with his passion for sports during his childhood. He excelled in football and javelin, winning numerous gold medals. Later, he joined the army as a sepoy when he was just 17 years old. He acquired the motivation to break all shackles of the human spirit and test his limits in every possible way.
Jamwal’s journey as an Ace Mountaineer started when he cleared the Officer Examination (Army Cadet College) and joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, in 1998. In 2003, he attended the High-Altitude Warfare School, Gulmarg, for a course and left as a convert. He got the opportunity to be a part of the Army mountaineering team, which was a great honour for him. In 2007, he climbed Machoi near Zoji La, marking the beginning of his successful mountaineering career.
Colonel Jamwal is known as the Best Mountaineer in India and has climbed seven summits and Mount Everest three times. He is a veteran of more than 30 mountaineering expeditions across seven continents. He has been awarded the Country’s highest Adventure Award, “The Tenzing Norgay Award” (Equivalent to the Arjuna Award) in 2013. He has also been honored with 7 Awards from the Army, including the Vishisht Seva Medal for climbing and the highest gallantry award in India.
In 2017, Colonel Jamwal was declared the best mountaineer of India by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, an apex mountaineering body. He was also awarded the IMF Gold Medal in the same year. Today, he is counted among the world’s best mountaineers, inspiring the upcoming generation with his achievements.
