How to care for travertine? Well, most people ask this when installing unique travertine marble wall cladding in their places. With a rustic look and veins, travertine is a perfect building material for modern interiors. But to make them last longer and look new, you should seal them timely following the right steps. And, we’ll talk about that in the below blog post.
A step-by-step guide to seal travertine tiles
Travertine is a natural stone with lots of pores and fissures. And thus, you must seal them at the earliest. Why? Well, because dust, water, moulds, bacteria, and dirt can enter your stone through open pores and cause permanent damage. Sealing your travertine tiles can block these pores and create a barrier between the stone and the environment.
The first time, to apply the sealants on the travertine is during the installation. After then you should seal it periodically. And here’s a step-by-step guide about travertine sealing,
1. Preparing Travertine for Sealing:
Before you put sealants on your travertine cladding, ensure to prepare them for the process. The following are the steps:
a) Ensure that the tiles are dust-free. Wipe the travertine cladding to dust them off. Besides that, also make sure that there’s no wax-coating on them.
b) Check if there’re any stains on the travertine cladding. Sealing stained travertine tiles can make the stains darker and more permanent. Hence, if there’re any stains, remove them using a pH-neutral cleaner beforehand.
c) Also, make sure that there’s no debris present on the cladding. Check for small dust, wire, or other objects before applying the sealant. Remove if there’re any to prevent your stone from getting rust stains.
2. Sealing Travertine Tiles:
Now that you’ve prepared your travertine cladding ready for the sealing, do the following:
a) Use a soft, cotton towel, sprayer, cloth pad, or brush to apply the sealant on the travertine cladding.
b) Leave the sealant for at least 30 minutes before applying the second/more coats.
c) After the final coating, leave it for at least 3-4 hours on the surface to get dried up.
d) Wipe off the excess sealant that hasn’t get absorbed by the travertine within 5 mins of application. Use a microfibre cloth or absorbent paper/towel for it.
e) Now test the sealing by throwing a few drops of water on the travertine clad. If the stone doesn’t absorb the water or change its colour, the sealant has been successfully applied.
3. Post-Sealing Travertine Care:
Now that you’ve sealed your travertine walls, ensure to follow the below post-sealing steps:
a) Avoid using strong chemicals or bleach to clean your travertine wall cladding.
b) Wipe up spills immediately even though your travertine tiles are sealed.
c) Clean your travertine cladding frequently to avoid dust accumulation or debris formation.
