Carlisle boasts several noteworthy schools and organizations. Many students participated in sports teams, debate clubs, marching bands, as well as professional footballers or authors – some even going on to professional careers themselves!

Ben Barclay’s extra-time goal gave Carlisle a 3-2 aggregate win against Bradford and secured their trip to Wembley for an eventual play-off final with Stockport County next Sunday.

Goals

Carlisle stunned Bradford 2-1 and advanced to the League Two final in front of 15,401 excited supporters, overturning a first-leg deficit thanks to Brad Halliday’s own goal in the 21st minute and Callum Guy’s late strike that secured them a two goal advantage that they held onto until deep into extra time.

At Brunton Park, a dramatic match saw Ryan Rydel come close to scoring a last-minute equaliser, only for it to strike off the crossbar instead. And thus the semi-final came to a close; penalties will now determine who advances to face Wembley on Sunday.

Both teams had plenty of chances on an eventful night for both sides, as Lewis made several key saves against Gordon’s low shot before then blocking another Moxon effort in the shootout. Barclay’s crucial penalty seald victory for Salford while Salford must wait another year before having another shot at promotion back into third-tier football.

Extra-time

Paul Simpson has led Carlisle from Conference to League One as player-manager over 16 years, but one game remains for Paul to write another chapter in its remarkable tale. It appeared like it might be long and difficult after Brad Halliday scored an own goal against Bradford to tie the Semi Final second leg, before Ben Barclay struck an unforgettable winning goal in extra time for Carlisle.

At 21 minutes, Bradford took the lead when Callum Guy’s free-kick was met at the far post by Corey Whelan’s thunderous header past Tomas Holy for an early lead. But an extra-time thriller saw both teams miss opportunities – Whelan saw his low shot blocked as they pressed while JK Gordon sent his cross wide for Bradford.

Carlisle substitutes Ryan Edmondson and Emmanuel Osadebe both came close for Carlisle before the final whistle triggered an unprecedented pitch invasion by joyous fans, celebrating Carlisle’s third straight play-off victory and facing Stockport in the final on Sunday.

Penalties

After halftime, City intensified their pressure with Scott Banks heading just wide and Owen Moxon being unable to find an opening with his shot. Banks then had another header blocked as City struggled to turn things around while Gordon saw his low attempt deflect wide before being denied by Lewis’ excellent reaction save.

Cumbrians took the lead early in extra time after Bradley Halliday forced an own goal header against himself, before Callum Guy quickly put them two goals up before Bradford equalised again with 37-year-old Matt Derbyshire scoring an equaliser.

Carlisle finally won when Barclay, on loan to Bradford and therefore not eligible to face his parent club at Wembley, met an Owen Moxon cross with a powerful header – sending Brunton Park wild with excitement – setting up the first EFL play-off final at Wembley since 2013/14, where Carlisle will meet Stockport County.

Final

At Brunton Park stands a banner which reads ‘Simpson is our King’ – and Carlisle manager Gary Simpson could write another remarkable chapter for Carlisle FC. After overturning a first leg deficit and winning their semi-final 3-2 on aggregate, Carlisle are set to face Stockport United FC in the final.

Carlisle took an early lead through Bradley Halliday’s own goal and Callum Guy’s strike, before Mark Hughes’ side equalised through Matt Derbyshire to force extra-time with Ben Barclay scoring an overtime winner and send Carlisle through to the final.

Stockport booked their place at Wembley with a 3-1 shootout win against Salford City at Edgeley Park, though their hopes of promotion in nine seasons were dashed by Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe who saved penalties from Adrian Mariappa and Stevie Mallen respectively.
