However other studies dispute the “appropriate management levels” specified by the BLM and indicate that range land can support higher levels of mustangs than the AML (Appropriate Management Levels) numbers.
The Conundrum of Management: Striking a Delicate Balance
The management of wild horse populations is a contentious issue, riddled with debates on ethics, methods, and funding. Culling and relocation, though necessary at times to maintain ecosystem balance, elicit strong emotions from various quarters. Making decisions based solely on emotion rarely results in good decisions. But making decisions solely on statistics deprives us of the most important parts of being human. There must be a balance in coming up with solutions to keep the American wild horses free and safe on our public lands.”
