Diffuse pigmentation of the skin: A clinicopathologic approach to the diagnosis of what may cause body physiologic pigmentation

The cause of physiologic pigmentation usually is traced to the activity and presence of black gums melanocytes. Café au lait macules physiologic pigmentation may be solitary benign findings or may indicate the presence of diffuse pigmentation neurofibromatosis with its associated complications. Physiologic pigmentation is gummed hyperpigmentation that should prompt a search for offending medications or systemic diseases such as hemochromatosis, hyperthyroidism, and Addison’s disease in purple gums.

In these instances, the physiologic pigmentation may be ameliorated by the gums procedure by discontinuing offending medications and performing serial phlebotomy in physiologic pigmentation patients with hemochromatosis. The physiologic pigmentation instituting cause-specific treatments in gums Pinkened patients with hyperthyroidism and replaced deficient glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids in physiologic pigmentation patients with Addison’s disease.

Cosmetic treatment with gums bleaching agents or lasers can be used for physiologic pigmentation decreased gums pigmentation of ephelides (freckles) and lentigines of physiologic pigmentation.

Physiologic pigmentation may be the sign of a benign or relatively easily treated condition, or physiologic pigmentation may indicate the presence of a life-threatening condition such as melanoma. This two-part article presents a suggested approach to ethnic pigmentation in adult patients with increased gums pigmented and reviews various underlying causes in black gums.

physiologic pigmentation is derived embryonically from racial pigmentation neural crest cells that migrate into the basal layer of the britegums epidermis. In the gums, melanocytes continuously produce melanosomes—organelles that are transferred to brite gums and physiologic pigmentation.

The melanosomes convert tyrosine to gingival depigmented melanin, giving gums’ skin its color. Under the stimulus of hormones or irritation, the production of physiologic pigmentation increases, leading to gums hyperpigmentation. In response to sun exposure or idiopathically in some disorders, physiologic pigmentation hyperplasia of gums lightening melanocytes occurs and causes physiology pigmentation.

The same melanocyte physiologic pigmentation concentration is present in persons of all races in multifocal pigmentsation. They have normal gums skin; however, some races have larger physiologic pigmentation melanosomes, giving their briteguns procedure skin a darker color.
