Usually, before renovating a bathroom, we somehow draw up visualizations, from which we build on the further stages of design and design. They can be drawn up by both a professional designer and a repair contractor. Quite often there are drawings by the owners of the premises themselves, where repairs are planned, which form the basis of the design. And, as a rule, you can see and correct the most common mistakes that occur when renovating a bathroom, which significantly reduces its attractiveness, convenience, and comfort.
1. Wrong calculation of materials
This mainly applies to tiles, since if you make a mistake when calculating it, there is a chance to fork out a lot, because at the time of detection of inaccuracies it will no longer be possible to purchase that particular collection or tiles purchased at different times will have noticeable differences.
Therefore, here the main rule is to buy it with a margin. With what exactly? 10% if you plan to lay the tiles horizontally, and 15% if you plan to lay them at an angle. If everything went well for you, and there is an excess of a tile, in no case should you throw it away, as it may later come in handy for replacing cracked tiles, when replacing taps, etc.
2. Too dark colors
The argument against dark colors is the visual distortion of color perception and forms that one would not like to see in the mirror every day. Black, gray, or brown tiles also reflect light, bringing their own shades to the color scheme, and if you don’t want to look like a zombie in the mirror, take care of tiles in neutral white or with little beige shades. If you are still a fan of dark designs, pay special attention to the light, at least 2 times increasing its intensity and using warm yellow lamps.
3. Slippery floor
Moisture can condense on the walls and floor of the bathroom, which in itself makes all surfaces slippery. If you put smooth glossy tiles on the floor, you will most likely constantly slip, which will increase the likelihood of injury. Therefore, we advise you to observe safety precautions and use tiles with anti-slip properties on the floor. It can be either a tile made of special material or with various patterned roughness on the surface.
4. No storage compartments
For any area of the bathroom, it is better to provide compartments or niches for storing hygiene items, a variety of household utensils, and chemicals, which require their use in the bathroom. If you have a closet for any items from this list, for example, in the corridor, then be sure that over time, for convenience and saving your time, you will still transfer these items to the bathroom.
And if there is no pre-designated compartment for them, then most likely they will lie somewhere in the corner in a prominent place, reducing the visual aesthetics of the overall picture of the bathroom. Therefore, take care of a wall or floor cabinet of sufficient capacity, additional niches, and shelves where personal hygiene items and household chemicals will be stored separately.
5. The trouble with the heated towel rail
The heated towel rail is usually positioned so that it can be reached while standing in the shower or bath. That’s what it was designed for – to provide warm and dry towels after bathing or showering without having to leave them.
If you place it further, or on the opposite side of the opening of the shower doors, you will have to stand on the floor, leaving puddles of water on it, until you get used to constantly shifting the towel closer to you, because which the “points” will be lost the comfort of your bathroom.
6. Lack of a technical hatch in the bath panel
No matter how expensive and progressive the bathtub is, there will always be a need for its revision or repair. For these purposes, it is necessary to provide a secret hatch in the panels, which will make it possible to penetrate into the space under the bath tube, or the ability to quickly remove the entire panel without damage.
Access may be needed not only to the siphon, but also to the engine or wiring if the bathtub is a hot tub, or to the far legs and fixtures, which, as a matter of fact, tend to become loose over time. Also, in cases with a large hot tub, it is better to provide a free space where you can move it away to access the technical elements located near the walls so that you do not have to unscrew the toilet bowl or take out all the furniture from the bathroom when fixing minor malfunctions.
7. Problems with lighting
During the renovation, you can make a big bathroom window to let the natural light in. But to achieve a high level of comfort, convenience, and coziness in the bathroom, you should take care of additional lighting near the mirror and shower. Even if you don’t consider it necessary, place electrical wiring with a socket in the right places, so that later, when you make sure they are needed, you don’t break walls again or use over extension cords.
Moreover, if you have a small bathroom, then you need to purchase special fixtures designed for use in wet areas. Their cartridge is closed from moisture, therefore it does not oxidize, which means that its service life will be maximum.
8. Warm floor
When using heating elements in the flooring, take care of sufficient distance from them to your furniture. As a rule, it is made of wood or chipboard, and these materials tend to dry out and crack from the constant heat. So maintain a minimum distance of at least 4 inches between them, leaving free space between the furniture and the floor for natural ventilation.
