For someone who has been born and brought up in a middle-class family, the importance of value for money is immense. We always want to get the best returns for the money we spend but when it comes to emotions, we don’t hold back ourselves.
Recently, when my parents announced that they would be coming over to stay with me for a couple of days, I applied for a 10-day leave from work to take them around various places in Mumbai. My father was a fan of SUVs but could never own one. Since, I was looking into buying a new car myself, I decided to go for an SUV to surprise my father.
A friend of mine owned a Renault Kiger. After much research and test drives, I too liked the car and had recently received its delivery. My parents were unaware of this development in my life!
I went to receive them at the railway station. When we walked back to the parking lot, my parents were pleasantly surprised to find that I was loading their luggage in a new Renault Kiger.
“Whose car is this, Sanjay?” my father asked.
“How does that matter, dad?” I replied and continued to load the boot.
He did not say anything, but I could see that he was not comfortable with my answer. He opened the rear door carefully to get in with my mother.
“Why are you sitting in the back? Come, sit with me here” I told him, pointing to the navigator’s seat. He did as suggested.
I turned on the AC, started the FM radio that played some old songs and we drove towards my home. I knew that the journey would take atleast 45 minutes and hence decided to check his opinion about Renault Kiger.
“So, what do you think about this car dad? Do you like it?” I asked him.
“It is good,” he said, “But must be quite costly, right?”
“Not really. Renault Kiger starts at just Rs. 5.99 lakh* (Ex. Showroom Delhi)” I answered.
I could see my father getting a bit comfortable now.
“I like the car” he continued. “It has very comfortable seats which would be convenient on long drives. Also, your mother seems to be very comfortable in the rear seat, which means she has a lot of legroom there.’
From that point onwards, my father did all the talking and I did the listening. When we were halfway through the drive, I decided to reveal to them the big surprise about the car being ours. My parents were in disbelief, but I continued the conversation about my Renault Kiger.
“Dad, on the outside Renault Kiger has LED DRLs, projector headlamps, 205 mm of high ground clearance and a solid build. On the inside, it has ergonomic seating, ARKAMYS 3D sound system, 222 mm of rear-seat legroom, wireless smartphone charger, push start/stop, smart card access, rear view camera, auto AC, 17.78 cm reconfigurable TFT instrument cluster, and a super-responsive 20.32 cm touchscreen display.”
I noticed that my father was impressed with Renault Kiger’s specifications and was checking out all the features himself.
I continued, “Even space isn’t an issue since Renault Kiger has a boot of 405L which can be expanded to 879L by folding the rear seats. Besides this, the car even has 29L of storage space to carry all travel essentials.”
“But how much is the maintenance cost and what is its average fuel consumption?” my father was now really interested.
“Renault Kiger has a super-efficient HR10 petrol engine which delivers an average of 20.53 KMPL. It even has low maintenance of just 40 paise/km*. This means that not only is the car value for money to buy but is also very easy to maintain!” I was now sure my parents had loved Renault Kiger.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am for you Sanjay. You have made us proud.” I could see that his eyes were getting moist. We did not speak a word after that and soon we were home. I was happy that I had given my parents a huge surprise. The sheer happiness on their face proved that I got back way more value than I had spent.
