If you have been on the Internet in the past few days, then chances are high, you may have come across ‘Quiet Quitting’. What is this buzz word and why should you be concerned about it? Let’s dive deep into this phenomenon creating waves in the job market.
To be concise and to the point, Quiet Quitting is about rejecting the idea that one’s life should revolve around his/her work. At a time, when Freshers and young adults are advised and possibly hypnotized by the glamour of ‘Hustle’, Quiet Quitting advocates for its complete opposite.
Its definition and meaning might change with each individual and organization but it generally includes turning down projects not based on the interest of the individual, refusing to entertain clients/ work calls outside of working hours or just performing roles falling within the KRA and not going beyond.
TikTok’s relation to Quiet Quitting
Post- Pandemic, the type of jobs chosen by individuals depended heavily on the work environment and hours of work. Especially, in metro cities where job seekers want to move from toxic work environments to companies offering lesser pay but a healthier and positive work- environment. Due to this
Job Vacancy in Delhi is high. People affected by Burnout are choosing companies which realise this critical balance of work and life.
This TikTok trend of ‘Quiet Quitting’ was posited as a solution to this problem of ‘Burnout’ by GenZ. Since the quantum of awareness about mental health has increased and people now put greater emphasis on finding a job which offers a better work-life balance.
But we shouldn’t look at this trend as just a fad which will go away quietly, since Quiet Quitting is not new. It was used in the past but people just knew it by a different name. This approach may work for some but it’s not a permanent solution
The real issue behind this trend
The real thing of concern should be why are people opting for it in the first place. What’s the reason behind your burnout or dissatisfaction? It could be people don’t appreciate being made to perform non-promotional Job vacancy. The feeling of their efforts going unrecognised. The major issue of being underpaid and overworked.
‘Quiet quitting’ can be a temporary fix to this bigger problem that organizations and companies are unwilling to conform to new dynamic changes in the mentality of employees and future generations entering the labour force.
The older generation and companies with the mindset that employees need to go above and beyond their work roles are assets to the companies and those that choose to perform within their KRAs are not, need to understand that times have changed.
Future of Quiet Quitting
At present, inflation has skyrocketed the living costs of today’s generation, this generation struggles to find a decent paying job, and has to save to invest to secure their future. So, performing work without compensation takes a toll on their mental health and ends up hurting the companies in the long run.
The cost of living in metro cities like Bengaluru, and Mumbai is so high that Job Vacancy in Mumbai fills up faster than most. People need a job to live, eat and for their other necessities. When employers exploit this need for a job of an employee to extract more work, Quiet Quitting of such employees gets a valid justification.
It’s time that employees should raise these concerns with their boss and brainstorm solutions which is a win-win for both. If having an honest discussion about your work-life balance leads to punishment, reprimand or you getting a termination letter. Then, that’s a sign to start searching for another job since you were not in the right place.
