A functional diagnostics doctor is a specialist in the medical field with a higher education, who conducts various types of examinations of patients using modern medical equipment. Its activity is aimed at identifying various disorders, deviations in the work of body systems.

Qualification Requirements

Functional diagnostics is aimed at an adequate assessment of the state of systems and organs, determining the severity of the identified pathology, and compiling a detailed description. The specialist determines deviations in the work of one or more organs, diagnoses congenital or acquired diseases, and evaluates the functionality of the organ.

A doctor of functional diagnostics must have a complete higher medical education (master’s or bachelor’s degree) in the specialty “General Medicine” or “Pediatrics”. After training (for a period of six years), he undergoes an internship in the specialty “Therapy”, and then in the specialization “Functional Diagnostics”.

A doctor may be trained in another specialty (Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Pulmonology, etc.), and then undergo professional retraining.

The position is provided in any hospital, private or public clinic, in the perinatal center, dispensary and sanatorium, boarding house.

Requirements for the knowledge of a doctor of functional diagnostics

A specialist working in the medical field must master the basics of professional ethics, know the rules of the labor schedule. In case the patient needs emergency medical care, he must be able to provide it.

The doctor of functional diagnostics must know:

  • principles of diagnostic planning and reporting;

  • medical indications and contraindications for various types of examinations.

The specialist must know and understand the features of the course and treatment of common pathologies, despite the fact that his activity does not imply therapy.

In his work, a functional diagnostics doctor uses various devices, including endoscopes, CT, ultrasound, MRI, cystoscopes, etc. He must know the rules for using medical equipment and be able to use it to make a diagnosis.

A doctor of functional diagnostics must also have the PC skills necessary to conduct his activities, work with programs that process the results of the examination.

The specific method is determined depending on the area being examined. If a pathology of the respiratory organs is suspected, this is pneumotachography or spirography. If examination of the work of the heart and blood vessels is required, one or several methods are selected: ECG, transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, Holter monitoring, duplex scanning of vessels.

The specialist must observe medical secrecy, the laws of the Russian Federation relating to healthcare, treat patients and colleagues with equal respect.

Job responsibilities of a doctor of functional diagnostics

The doctor of functional diagnostics not only conducts procedures aimed at examination and diagnosis. The specialist does not have to treat or prescribe drugs, give advice on therapy, but his activity plays an important role in the subsequent treatment. He collects an anamnesis, listens to the patient’s complaints, analyzes the information received, determines the presence of medical indications and contraindications for the procedure.

The examination allows the attending physician to make a correct diagnosis to the patient and correct the course of the disease.

Specialist responsibilities include:

  • both planned and emergency examinations before surgery;
  • analysis of the situations that have occurred within the framework of the medical commission;
  • registration of medical documents;
  • admission of patients in the direction of other specialists with the determination of the examination method suitable for the proposed diagnosis;
  • evaluation of treatment outcomes;
  • participation in field surveys;

The duties of a functional diagnostics doctor include carrying out a procedure and assessing the state of systems and organs (respiration, heart and blood vessels, nervous system, digestive tract, endocrine system, etc.). He cooperates with doctors of other specialties and uses various devices and instruments designed for examination: EEG, ECG, EchoCG, CT, etc.

The specialist must prepare the patient for the procedure, as well as timely identify conditions that pose a threat to life, if necessary, provide emergency care.

Responsibilities include the development of new methods aimed at examining systems and organs, carrying out activities to arouse public interest in a healthy lifestyle. The doctor must motivate patients to give up bad habits, change their lifestyle if it provokes various pathologies.

Rights of a specialist
