Early Life
Imran Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan, on October 5, 1952. Of Pashtun ethnicity, he came from a wealthy family, which allowed him to study in England and enter Oxford University. He started his international cricket career when he was 18, in a Test series against England in 1971.
In addition, he became something of a star among the young girls of London’s high society, with whom he had numerous romances. At that time, as rumors reveal, he had an affair with the legendary former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was also studying at Oxford.
Cricket Career
Khan started his cricket career in 1971 and played until 1992. He served the national cricket team as the captain intermittently between 1982 and 1992. He soon became a global star, but the zenith of his career was reached in 1992 when he brought the World Cup to the country. In his captaincy, Pakistan won the Cricket World Cup held in 1992, which was the first and only victory of the national team in the competition.
Marriage life
Khan married British screenwriter, television, film, and documentary producer Jemima Goldsmith, a close friend of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1995. Jemima converted to Islam, and the couple has two sons, Sulaiman Isa and Kasim. Unfortunately, this marriage relationship of nine years ended on June 22, 2004. It is allegedly said that adapting to life in Pakistan was difficult for Jemima.
In early 2015, Khan married Reham Khan, a British-Pakistani journalist. A private Nikah ceremony was held at his residence in Islamabad. However, Reham Khan later revealed in her autobiography that they were married in October 2014 and announced in January 2015. The couple announced their intention to file for divorce on October 22.
In mid-2016, reports emerged that Khan had married Bushra Bibi, his spiritual mentor (Murshid). However, it was confirmed on February 18, 2018, that Khan had married Bushra Bibi. Khan said Sufism had influenced him for the last thirty years, which drew him closer to his wife.
Political Career
Khan decided to establish his political party in Pakistan in 1996. So, he founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, with a nationalist and populist bent. In addition, he developed a robust philanthropic activity, establishing hospitals and universities in Pakistan.
After several years as leader of the opposition in the national assembly, Khan won general elections in 2018 and became prime minister of Pakistan. His topmost measures were aimed at improving the country’s economy. However, different factors, including the feudal system, favoritism, and, most importantly, the pandemic, ruined his plans.
Rising inflation and corruption were allegedly the significant factors during his tenure that compelled his team to leave the government. The feeling in public opinion that Khan not only had not stopped corruption but also increased it caused the parliament to raise a ‘No Confidence motion. Such a motion came to fruition on April 10, 2022, being the first Pakistani PM to lose office in this way. By making a cipher public, Khan accused the United States of being behind his downfall.
