What is pool table?
A pool table is a billiard table on which pool, a cue sport, is played. Pool tables come in a variety of sizes and styles, and are made from a variety of materials including wood, stone, slate, and composite materials such as fiberglass or carbon fiber.
The most common size for a good quality residential pool table and cue is 8 feet (2.4 m) long by 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, but other sizes are available as well. Pool tables are also manufactured in unusual sizes such as 7-foot (2.1 m), bar size (6-foot/1.8 m), and mini (3 1⁄2-foot/1.0 m) versions that are used for various recreational games.
Pool tables are distinguished from snooker tables by their much smaller size and the presence of six pockets, rather than the ten used in snooker. A standard pool table has six pockets, usually including two at each end of the table, and one each at the “foot” (narrow end) of the long sides.
Pool is a game generally played on a rectangular table that ranges in size from 3.5 feet by 7 feet (1.1 m × 2.1 m), up to 4.5 feet by 9 feet (1.4 m × 2.7 m). The balls range in size from 2 1⁄4 inches (57 mm) to 2 1⁄2 inches (64 mm) in diameter.
Pool is commonly played on a table with six pockets, cue sticks and 16 balls: a cue ball, and 15 object balls consisting of seven striped balls, seven solid-colored balls and the black 8 ball.
After the break shot, the players are assigned either the solid balls or the stripes as their group of object balls, and are assigned to pocket all of their assigned balls and then the 8 ball to win the game.
As a secondary objective after hitting their own group of object balls, players attempt to hit each other’s cue ball in order to foul (referred to as “safety play”). When a player fouls, he must forfeit his turn, leave the cue ball in position ,and allow his opponent to play from where the cue ball lies.
A player may also forfeit his turn if he fails to hit the cue ball on pool table with his cue stick, or knocks one of the balls off the table. Play passes to the opponent who did not commit a foul or scratch on his turn.
When neither player has yet pocketed any balls after a suitable number of shots (usually several dozen), play typically proceeds as follows: The players agree to play until one of them wins a set number of games (“best out of…”).
For example, in a “best out of three” match, the first player to win two games wins the match. If only one game is played per session, then this is usually referred to as playing for money rather than playing for points.
