In September 1998, Fat Joe and Big Pun were charged with assault after hitting a man using a baseball bat and taking the man’s gold necklace on June 14 of the same year. Joe was again arrested on May 12, 2002, after being accused of fighting with a man in B.B. King’s Blues Club in Times Square However, the charges were dismissed on January 10, 2003.

The former bodyguard Joe, Jose Mulero, was arrested on September 17, 2004, over the April 15 shooting the death that killed 16-year-old Ernesto Rivera at a Bronx nightclub. In response to a subpoena Fat Joe claimed to have witnessed the shooting and witnesses fleeing the scene; however, investigators claimed that he was in a closed position to Mulero and was standing near a door.

Fat Joe was also named by Miami Beach police as a witness to a double homicide outside David’s Cafe II on Memorial Day. Jermaine Wufgang Chamberline of Miami Gardens was accused of shooting Lessli Paz and Joey Navarro to death on the morning of the shooting. Fat Joe and the two victims were in the rental Cadillac Escalade parked outside the restaurant when a scuffle was fought between the passengers and a man.

Then, in December of 2012, Fat Joe pleaded guilty to tax evasion for not paying tax on income of more than $3 million between 2007 and 2010. On June 24, 2013, Fat Joe was imprisoned for four months for tax avoidance. He was convicted on August 26, 2013, before being released on November  28, 2013.
