Kho Kho can be described as an ancient tag game created in India. This game can be played between teams of 12 players nominated from 15 players. Nine players enter the field and are in a knee position (chasing team) while the three additional participants (defending team) attempt to stay clear of being slapped by players of the team that is in opposition. Following Kabaddi, Kho Kho is the most played tag game played in The Indian subcontinent. It is not just played in India however, the game is practiced by people from the Indian communities within South Africa. The word ‘Kho appears to originate of it being derived from the Sanskrit Verb root, you, which means “get up and go”. With Kho Kho moving from the streets to the spotlight There are many talented athletes that are responsible for its rise.

It was in 2010 that the newly-formed Kho-Kho Federation of India had planned to host the Kho-Kho World Series similar to that of the Baseball World Series in America. A group of enthusiasts from the Kho-Kho sport chose to join the Federation and raise awareness about the long-standing sport. Satish Rai was a fervent supporter of promoting and assisting the sport, speaking to the media about the advantages of the scheme.

Sarika Kale who is the head of the Indian women’s Kho-kho team recently led the nation’s team to win a gold medal at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) in Guwahati.

As young girl years old, Sarika started playing kho-kho and then began to take fascinated with the game. As time passed, she learned the art of playing and was a state representative for Maharashtra at 25 national championships.

Mandakini Majhi

Mandakini Majhi, also known as the name of Odisha girl is the renowned Kho Kho player from Odisha. She was part of the Indian women’s Kho Kho team to take part at the 12th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Guwahati

A poor family background, deciding to play kho-kho as an athletic endeavor was difficult for Majhi. She was able to overcome the challenges and move to the top of the mountain to achieve success.

Achievements

  • The year 2012 was the time that Mandakini took part in representing her country at the 46th Senior National Kho-Kho Championship, which was held in Maharashtra.
  • Participated in The 59th National School Games held in 2013 in Delhi along with competing in the 33rd Junior National Kho-Kho Championship.
  • In the 19th East Zone National Kho-Kho Championship 2014, Mandakini along with her team was able to secure the second spot. In the following time, the team finished third at the Junior National Kho-Kho Championship, which was held in Rajasthan.
  • Reprised Odisha in The National Games of 2015
  • In the year 2016 Mandakini together with her team won the gold medal for the country, becoming only the second Odiya girl selected to the Indian team for the kho-kho event.

She is also one of the very first Odia women on the Indian kho-kho team at the “12th SAF Game of 2016” and also won an award of gold.

Praveen Kumar

Praveen Kumar is among the most talented and well-known Kho Kho players from Mysore, Karnataka. He was a key player in the University of Mysore’s (UoM) success in both the South Zone and All India Inter-University Men’s Kho-Kho Championships (2017-18) played in the city.

Praveen began playing Kho-Kho when he was in Middle School( Biagini Seva Samaj ). Later, he continued to pursue his passion for the sport by participating in the game in high school at Sarada Vilas HS. Senior players, including Yogesh who plays for Pioneers SC, encouraged him to get serious about the game.

Praveen finished his studies at the age of M.Com Student from Manasagangothri, Mysuru. He also played for Karnataka at the Senior National Kho-Kho Championships two times. It was his part in Karnataka’s Karnataka Senior team which won the silver medal in 2013-14. They also secured third place at the Senior Nationals held at Telangana in the year 2015.

The year 2016-17 was a great one for Praveen. Praveen participated in the group that finished third at the All India Inter-University level.
