The Namma Bangalore Metro is a rapid transit system that serves the city of Bengaluru, India. It was inaugurated in 2014 and became the first underground metro system in South India. The Namma Metro mixes underground, at grade, and elevated stations. The system runs on standard-gauge tracks. The work of Bangalore metro phase 3 is yet to be started. The 2A and 2B phases are nearing completion. 

There are primarily two lines – The purple Line and the Green line. The Purple Line runs from Kengerit to Byappanahalli. The system spans 23 stations, 18 elevated, two underground, and one at ground level with 25.7 kilometers of track. The Line passes through many of the city’s prime activity centers, including MG Road, Vidhana Soudha, and Majestic, interchange stations between Purple and Green Lines. 

The Green line: This is a 30.5 km rail line connecting Nagasandra with Silk Institute. The Line connects the industrial areas of Peenya and Yelahanka with Majestic, a central business district, and the residential regions of Bangalore (Basavanagudi, Jayanagar, Banashankari, etc.). Green Line has 26 elevated stations and three underground stations.

When phase 2 of Namma Metro is completed, the purple and green line lengths will be 42 and 34 km, respectively. 

Namma Bangalore Metro Phase 3 

The phase 3 project of Namma Metro aims to provide better connectivity with existing metro stations, suburban railway stations, and bus depots at specific points, making traveling a seamless experience. The total length of the Phase three project is 42 km and is expected to be operational by 2028-2030. The project is expected to cost Rs 13,500 crore. 

The Phase 3 project will include two elevated corridors with 31 Metro stations and intersections with other Metro lines at five stations.

According to a report, Bangalore metro Phase 3 will have two corridors. The first corridor will function from JP Nagar to Hebbal, which is 31 km in length, and the second corridor will run for 11 km from the Hosahalli toll gate to Kadabagere. Construction on Phase 3 is expected to begin in 2025 and end in the mid-2030s. By the time construction begins, multiple changes in the project’s scope & alignment might occur. 

New lines to be Added During Phase 3 of Namma Metro. 

  1. Carmelaram to Yelahanka is 37 km in length. 
  2. Marathahalli to Hosakerehalli is 21 km 
  3. Silkboard – KR Puram – Kempapura is 29 km 

The Silkboard: KR Puram along the outer ring road route is fast-tracked and is nearing completion under the 2A phase. This route is expected to open this year. This route is expected to be named the Blue line. 

According to the previous plans, the Line was supposed to terminate at Hebbal Railway Station. However, it will be extended for 2 km up to Kempapura to connect with the Airport Line.
