Hello and welcome to geturbooks club today we are discussing daisy may cooper’s autobiography do not laugh it will only encourage her i was eagerly anticipating this book because i really enjoy daisy may cooper i devoured this country i also watched her on taskmaster and i follow her on instagram so i could not wait to read this i put off buying it because my boyfriend told me he was going to get me it for christmas which he did and i read it in just under a week the first chapter of this book talks about daisy’s overactive imagination as a child.
which i found really relatable especially when he kept talking about the borrowers because i really enjoyed the borrowers as a child and nobody ever heard of them and when i told people about them when i was older everyone’s like oh yeah we read that it was so dumb so it was really nice to read about someone who also enjoyed the borrowers as much as i did there were also quite a few of daisy’s childhood drawings and stuff in this chapter which were interesting enough as interesting as any five-year-old’s drawing can be i guess the second chapter of this book is called spawn of satan and it is all about dizzy trying to come to terms with her.
Baby brother charlie and really resenting him for simply being younger than her which i found quite funny and very natural for any child there was a very funny story about charlie and daisy throwing matchmakers at a topless fat lady who lived next door i do not know why it was funny it just was so i liked that as well i also enjoyed listening to her humanize her toys which every child does and how each of them had a personality because did not we all do that i really enjoyed learning about her mum her mom sounds like such a character i loved the way that he was always looking after injured animals and the way she would go joking in second-hand shops i think a lot of people’s moms are like that mine included so again found it really relatable and quite nice to read we have best books to read like red white and royal blue ebook
It was nothing overly exciting it was just nice and pleasant daisy does have a dark side though and there was a horrible moment where she tricked her two-year-old brother charlie into believing it was his birthday when it was not and even though it was quite cruel it was funny and very sibling like the sort of thing you would do to get your own back and again just funny children hi jinx the book takes a darker turn in chapter 3 where they talk about daisy’s aunt dying and having to have her life support machine turned off which was very traumatic to read about and the effect that had on her whole family especially her mother who was very close to her sister and how she would take daisy to all these tarot card readings and spiritualists and how that kind of came through in school when she would write stories about death and ghosts and also how it gave her a real love for ghost stories and making those stories up which she did in school and then later did on facebook.
Making a village ghost page there is also a bit of a downward turn where it talks about daisy’s family’s poverty during her childhood very sad bits where it talks about them having no electric at christmas and new christmas presents they did secret santa where everyone was told they could spend less than a fiver and going to cardboard sales to sell all pieces of furniture simply so they could feed themselves but it also talks about them going on holiday camping holidays mainly but they did have a couple to the south of france which in their own ways were both disastrous one through flood and the second through daisy being a teenager and wanting to meet all the boys and her mother striding across the field in a marge simpsons nighty to tell her to come back
To the tent or she would catch chlamydia which i also thought was very funny reading about daisy’s teenage years were definitely the highlight of this book souped up rental clios and going out with boys and cars to drink things they should not have been drinking but it was funny enough you know and then when she gets her nine to five job in debenhams i know it was definitely because i used to work for phase eight in debenhams so she was definitely talking about debenhams even though she never mentions the retail store by name you just know and her taking a vibrator to work also her stealing levi jeans which i thought was very very smart how she did it i would not have i would not have the guts to do that i also thought it was hilarious how he nearly sold princess anne a store card did not know it was princess anne because she took no interest in the royal family and she pretty much got fired for that in the end like after he did not recognize princess anne and embarrassed the whole store they did not really want her around anymore especially not in women’s wear read also the love stories like The hating game pdf
Then there comes a sadder part of daisy’s life when she is flat sharing with three girls in one bedroom in shepherd’s bush and the three girls are all portuguese and like to talk about her behind her back because she does not speak portuguese daisy is going out and trying to find any sort of acting work she can and failing at it miserably there’s some horrible scenes where she goes to this monologue and there’s a woman with a massive massive strap-on pretending she is dominating her husband and that’s their monologue there’s also some other very depressing bits where she’s pretty sure she accidentally auditioned to be in a porno and she ends up taking out lots of credit cards and payday loans and getting herself in a lot of debt and having to move back home she of course tells the infamous paul dancing story with some more details but pretty much the same as you know coffees with comedians but i still liked it then comes the wrath chapters i enjoyed the chapter about her in acting skull but i did not feel it was long enough and i did not feel like it gave us enough detail i felt like this chapter could have actually been three chapters if you would gone into a little bit more detail about the people she was in class with perhaps even some nights out well at university.
What her and charlie got up to when charlie came to live with her in her dorms i do not know i just feel like she left a lot out she obviously did not enjoy a lot of her time at rada and some of the teachers sound really really horrible so maybe she left it out on purpose who wants to dig all that horrible nasty stuff up and i did find it funny how she managed to spend all her student loan on a hotel room for four nights i do not know i just thought it was really funny a little bit naive on her part but she is from the middle of the country so understandable horrible for her because then she ended up having to take out another loan for university but still funny then there are the wilderness years which are all about her searching for acting work and not being able to get anything for a multitude of reasons also her parents losing their house due to the financial collapse and many other things not having any money having to put on her possessions there are some very very sad scenes about her going to a point shop to pawn literally everything she owns of value
It all comes back full circle though when the guy who worked in the pawn shop comes to their this country book signing which i thought was nice and daisy said was one of the high points of her life when she knew she would kind of made it there there’s also some very funny job center scenes where there’s a drunk man who thinks he’s a vampire which i liked if you have ever been to a job center you know they are a bit like that there is also a chapter about daisy’s small part in doc martin which you can still find on youtube if you look hard enough because i did after reading this chapter which sounds like one of the most horrific experiences of her life and i am not surprised i do not want to ruin it for anybody who’s going to read it but it’s good it then goes on to talk about how her and charlie made up these characters of kerry and curtin to amuse themselves while doing their cleaning jobs.
Which i already knew about because i have watched quite a few documentaries with them or little snippets on youtube or if you have ever watched the making of this country you hear a lot of these stories so there was nothing really new i did like hearing about how they first took this country to itv who tried to change all of it and how they did a pilot i thought the idea of kerry being in love with curtin in the itv version was kind of disgusted and sick because their brother and sister and they acted themselves also imagining carrie from this country as some sort of sexual being repulses me because she’s carrie the last chapter of this book is one of their first scripts for this country back when curtin was dale and it’s written all over and squiggled and crossed things out and it’s okay i mean it’s not that interesting and that is honestly one of my issues with this book is because in the entire book.
Conclusion
I counted and there are 46 picture pages not written pages picture pages and i love some glossy pictures in the middle of the book which there are 12 of and that is fine but there are a lot of black and white pictures of report cards or her drawings as a child or school books or her degree and there is about as interesting as your friend showing you these i mean you show polite interest but nobody wants to read your report card from p7 at least i do not want to read anybody’s not even my own so i give this book a six out of ten if you like this country and you like daisy may cooper i would recommend it if you do not have a very firm interest in her it might not be for you but it’s an easy read good holiday read even though the book’s a little bit bulky but i think that might be because i got the hard copy version also if you like this country definitely follow daisy on instagram because she’s hilarious if you enjoyed this review remember to like comment and subscribe and all that good stuff see you guys next time bye
