Summertime means spending windy evenings outside with your family. Whether it’s in your backyard, patio, or by the pool— cooking outside is a fulfilling experience. Cooking outdoors is a great way to spend time with your loved ones, have fun, and enjoy delicious food.

However, not having the right setup can be a hindrance for many. Luckily, you can cook outside even if you don’t have basic appliances like a BBQ grill. After all, it’s about the food, the experience, and the memories you make. Right?

While grills are the best outdoor kitchen appliances, you can always go without them. This guide will cover ways you can cook food outdoors without using a modern cooker, like a Pit Boss Smoker.

To Get Started…

You will need an open fire. Yes, you read that right. It might take you a little time to start an open fire if you haven’t ever done this. Like most things though, with practice, you will learn. All you will need is the right wood, and you can start cooking outdoors.

If you’re going to be boiling something, you will need a fast and hot flame. For frying, you’re going to let the flame die and have the glowing coals do their job. For stewing, leave your food on low flame with lots of coals.

If your wood is really wet, it could take an hour before your fire actually starts to heat up, and its embers are ready for cooking your food. While that takes time, you can grab a cold beer and relax.

Pot on an open fire

Grate

Once you have lit the fire, you can place a grate on top of it. It’s similar to cooking or BBQ-ing over a grill. You would have to make sure your fire’s heat intensity is stable, but even if it fluctuates due to the wind, you can grill your vegetables and meat easily. You can make soup by setting a pot on your grate. Avoid grilling fatty things like bacon because the drippings will cause flame-ups.

Sticks

Ever toasted marshmallows on an open fire? You can use sticks for cooking your food. No need for grills, kettles, pans, and pots. Simply get the non-toxic sticks like willow, cherry, hazel, apple, and plum.

Make Shift Griddles

Let’s be real. Blackstone Griddles or Pit Boss Griddles are amazing, and they are just like grills, but with a flat surface. If you want to stick to cooking without a grill, you can use a cast iron griddle on top of grill grates on your fire, or just on the open fire itself. With this simple flat top grill you can enjoy anything from pancakes and sausages to salmon and steaks.
