With less than a week until he returns to the state that kicks off the presidential election, former President Trump warns in a new interview that if he runs for president again, the majority of Republicans will “drop out.”
However, if Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose popularity among conservatives has soared in the last year and a half, also seeks the GOP candidacy in 2024, Trump underlines, “I’d beat him.”
The former president made his remarks in excerpts posted Sunday from a forthcoming interview with Yahoo Finance.
Trump maintains a high level of popularity and influence among Republican voters and lawmakers as he continues to play a kingmaker role in party politics and flirts with launching a third consecutive presidential campaign in an attempt to reclaim the White House.
Trump maintains a commanding lead in all of the ultra-early polls for the Republican presidential primary race in 2024. However, in hypothetical questions in which Trump is not on the ballot, DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence consistently outperform a vast field of potential candidates.
Over the last year and a half, the conservative governor has seen a surge in popularity among Republican voters in his state and around the country, owing in large part to his forceful pushback against COVID-19 regulations during the pandemic.
DeSantis, who faces a possibly difficult reelection next year, has sparked additional talk about 2024 with his campaign excursions outside the Sunshine State. He was in western New York State on Tuesday, presiding over a fundraiser as he continues to amass cash in preparation for his reelection campaign in 2022.
“I doubt I’ll face him,” Trump said in the interview when questioned about challenging DeSantis in a GOP presidential primary contest in 2024. “I believe the majority of people would drop out; I believe he would.”
