Having a baby costs a bundle, but you will want to allocate some of your budget to your maternity wardrobe. Just like any good wardrobe, there are those items that you will splurge on and those that are budget buys. Before you buy a thing, make sure you know where your money should go to ensure that you’re buying just what you need for the months ahead.

Where to Splurge?

Splurge on items that support your body and/or items that can be worn during and post-pregnancy.

#Maternity Leggings

Soft, stretchy, and figure-flattering maternity leggings are a wardrobe staple for pregnant women. They are a savior for moms-to-be at every stage of pregnancy and useful post-baby as during pregnancy. So splurge on them as they are the key to a comfortable pregnancy.

#The Little Black Dress

From the office to a night out, and even for those days that you feel like looking a little bit more pulled together, this is a piece that will go far. Whether it’s a body-con or wrap style, ensure that the fit is perfect and made of quality material. Then, you’ll walk away with a piece you can wear during and after your pregnancy.

#Bras

Set aside a budget for a few good maternity and nursing bras as well as a fitting. Your body will thank you for getting the proper support for your growing girls. And, you’ll thank yourself when you no longer feel the discomfort and pain from an ill-fitting bra.

#Maternity Pants

You probably have a few in your closet right now. Unfortunately, if you pull them out, you have to wear them a little lower on your hips as your belly grows. To avoid discomfort, consider investing in a few more pairs of highly stretchable maternity pants.

#Shoes

Shoes are items that you’ll want to splurge on. In particular, you’ll need to splurge on comfy flats with gelled insoles or a sneaker-like outer sole to support your feet and lower back.

Where to Save?

Save on items that you already own, or you’ll only use when pregnant. As a general rule, avoid splurging on something that you’re only going to wear once.

#Look Into Your Closet

You might be surprised what you’ll find in your wardrobe – accessories, flowing tops, jackets, and scarves. So before you even begin shopping, see what pieces you can use from your own closet.

#Jackets & Cardigans

Even if you have a winter pregnancy, there is no need to buy new jackets and cardigans. Instead, you can wear oversized or your partner’s winter wear to stay warm and cozy throughout the day and night.

#Camises

Don’t feel pressured into splurging here. Your pre-pregnancy long tank will do just fine. All you need is to ensure that it is stretchable and your bump will be covered.

#Skirts

Don’t assume you can’t wear your pre-pregnancy skirts because your belly is getting bigger. Instead, try wearing them low or on your waistline. You can even wear a skirt with a loose/stretchy waistline over the bump as well.

Of course, these are just a few of our ideas about the best way to make your budget work for you. Everyone is different and if you’ve learned a few other tips and tricks along the way, feel free to share them with others in the comment section below.
