How many hours should I study for the PMP exam?
Many people are apprehensive about the number of hours they should study for clearing the PMP certification exam and thus they frequently ask the question – “How many hours should you study for the PMP exam?”
Technically one can study as many hours as it takes to complete the PMP certification training and add a few hours every day for self-study but there is no hard and fast rule for how many hours one should study. There is no single definitive answer to this question as different people require different times to study.
Tips to prepare for the PMP exam –
1. Read the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) very thoroughly.
The PMP certification exam is based almost completely on the content contained within the PMBOK or the Project Management Body of Knowledge. So the candidate should become very well-versed with the PMBOK by studying it deeply and thoroughly. Only if they study the concepts and topics contained within the PMBOK will they be able to understand the practical application of them.
2. Make a very detailed preparation strategy.
The candidate will have to make a very detailed preparation strategy in order to clear the PMP certification exam successfully. In order to do this, they will first have to follow the order of topics as they are taught in the PMP certification training.
After they complete the PMP certification training they will have to make a preparation plan for their own self-study sessions, which will last at least 3 months. In the course of those 3 months, they will have to revise the entire syllabus of the PMP certification exam as it was taught in the PMP certification training comprehensively.
As the syllabus of the exam is vast and full of very complex concepts and topics, the candidate will need to make a very detailed preparation plan which they will have to follow diligently and religiously. They will have to set aside precisely measured amounts of time for each domain of knowledge of the PMBOK so that they will be able to cover the entire syllabus without leaving any topic out.
3. Get a book of practice questions on the PMP certification exam and solve it.
The candidate should purchase a book that contains a lot of practice questions for the PMP certification exam. The candidate will not be able to clear the PMP certification exam successfully on the basis of theoretical knowledge alone.
He will have to put that knowledge to the test by solving a lot of practice questions so that he gains some practical experience of solving PMP certification-related questions. This step can be covered if he takes PMP certification training since the training itself will assign many practice questions to the learners.
4. Utilize the 35 hours of project management training to the fullest extent.
Many learners make the mistake of taking the 35 hours of project management training lightly because of its short time duration. But the fact of the matter is that a lot of the practical aspects of project management are explained and elucidated in the project management training and the learners who pay close attention to the instructors of the training will be able to gain a very valuable familiarity with project management concepts as they are applied in the real world.
5. Attempt as many mock exams as possible.
There is another mistake that learners make frequently. They study the PMBOK deeply and thoroughly and they solve a lot of practice questions too but in the end, they fail to remember a crucial part of the preparation.
They do not attempt the practice exams which are available as a part of the PMP certification training. The practice exams are very important for the learners as they help the learners to familiarize themselves with the pattern of the PMP certification exam and also help them to develop a sense of confidence and faith in their own abilities.
