CBD oil is an extract from Cannabis indica (or Cannabis sativa) plants, which are the same plants that make marijuana. Some believe that CBD oil can be used to reduce pain, anxiety, and stimulate appetite, in much the same way as marijuana, but without any psychoactive effects. CBD oil has also been shown to be effective in certain types of seizures.
CBD, the abbreviation for cannabidiol (the chemical that is shorthand for cannabis), is one of the chemicals with the greatest health benefits. Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, produces the “high” psychoactive effects. THC is not usually found in CBD oil, but it may be present in some products sold in certain states.
CBD oil is CBD oil that contains CBD combined with an inert carrier oil such as hemp seed oil or coconut oil. You can purchase tinctures of the bottled oil in different concentrations. You can also find CBD capsules, CBD chewables and CBD sprays under the tongue.
Health Benefits Of CBD oil
The exact mechanism of CBD’s action is not known. High quality cbd oil is not as receptive to THC. Instead, it has a low affinity for the brain’s cannabinoid receptors. These molecules are where THC binds in order to produce its psychoactive effects.
High quality cbd oil, is believed to have the ability to influence other receptors such as opioid receptors that regulate pain, glycine receptors that regulate the regulation of neurotransmitter serotonin and the “feel good” hormone.
High quality cbd oil is claimed to be able to treat a variety of health issues, including:
- Acne
- Anorexia
- Anxiety
- Chronic pain
- Depression
- Withdrawal and drug addiction
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- High blood pressure
- Insomnia
- Muscle spasm
- Parkinson’s disease
While CBD is gaining popularity, so too does research on it. However, there are very few clinical studies that have been conducted on CBD oil’s effects. Some claims are more supported by research than others.
Here are Some Benefits of Cbd Oil
· Anxiety
CBD’s brain-activating effects could explain a part of this response. CBD can act as an agonist at several receptor sites in low doses. This means that it acts in a similar way to other molecules that normally bind with the receptor. This may enhance the signalling to those receptor sites. However, CBD can have an opposite effect at receptor sites, which could negate its beneficial effects.
· Addiction
A 2015 review of studies published by Substance Abuse suggests that high quality cbd oil could be beneficial for those suffering from drug addiction.
Scientists at the University of Montreal found that benefits of cbd oil were effective in relieving people suffering from opioid, cocaine or psychostimulant addictions.
The effects of CBD on different types of addiction were often quite distinct. For example, CBD did not reduce withdrawal symptoms in opioid addiction. However, CBD alone was effective in decreasing drug-seeking behavior in users of methamphetamine and cocaine.
Some have suggested that CBD could be used to treat nicotine addiction and cannabis addiction. More research is required.
· Nerve Pain
Medical marijuana is frequently prescribed to people with intractable (treatment-resistant) pain, including those with terminal cancer. Some evidence suggests that CBD may be able to provide this benefit.
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD injections to CBD-infused rats resulted in less inflammation and neuropathic pain.
· Heart Health
A 2017 JCI Insight study suggests that CBD oil may lower the risk of developing heart disease. It also helps to reduce hypertension, which is high blood pressure in some people.
Nine healthy men were given 600mg of CBD and the same amount of placebo to take part in this study. The researcher found that CBD treatment resulted in lower blood pressure after being exposed to stress stimuli, such as exercise and extreme cold.
Additionally, stroke volume, which is the amount of blood left in the heart after a heartbeat, was significantly lower, which means that the heart was pumping more efficiently.
These findings suggest that benefits of cbd oil could be an effective complementary therapy for those with hypertension caused by anxiety and stress. There is no evidence CBD oil can cure hypertension or prevent hypertension in those at high risk. Although stress can cause hypertension, it is not known if it can make high blood pressure worse.
· Seizures
The FDA approved Epidiolex in June 2018 as a CBD oral treatment for certain rare forms epilepsy in children aged 2 and under. These rare genetic disorders cause lifelong seizures and can be fatal.
CBD’s effectiveness in treating seizures, outside of these conditions, is not known. It is not clear whether CBD or another factor can cause seizures.
