Living in an apartment has its challenges, that’s for sure. However one of the biggest problems is how to share the internet. It isn’t uncommon for someone to be watching their favorite episode of Stranger Things on Netflix, only to have the video pause and start to buffer. If your Wi-Fi is often a point of contention with roommates, then you may want to consider some new setups for your internet.

One thing you can do is talk to your internet service provider (ISP) for some of their broadband management tips and suggestions for their product. Even so, keep reading for some of our suggestions.

Change The Placement Of Your Router

Positioning your router is one of the most important things you can do for your internet access. You want to keep your router in a centralized location for everyone in the house. Then, you want to ensure there aren’t thick walls or floors in between you and your router.

Another thing to think about is getting a second router, particularly if you have an older apartment with thicker walls or you have a larger home. Your second router probably won’t be as strong as your primary router, but it can help extend good coverage.

Another tip is to keep your router exposed. We often use a case or press our routers up against another piece of furniture. Don’t do that! Keep at least three inches of space all around the router for a full signal.

Don’t Put It In The Kitchen

While your kitchen may be the heart of your home, don’t put your router there. Your kitchen has a ton of devices that will interfere with its functionality, such as your microwave, stove, smart refrigerator, and anything else that is metal.

The changes in temperature can also shorten the lifespan of your router, making it necessary to buy a new one – which is an expense you don’t want to split with your roommates.

Use A Strong Password

If you live in an apartment, you are probably surrounded by other apartments and perhaps people who are trying to save money where they can. Sometimes, this means they won’t pay for their own internet. They will try to steal yours. Use a strong password to prevent someone from breaking into your internet and then change your password regularly.

Of course, you also want to think about changing your password after you give it to a bunch of people. That can clog up your connection and make it slower for everyone.

Change Wireless Channels

Sometimes, your wireless channel needs to be changed in order to get the best possible connection. If you have ever been in a truck that has a CB radio, you know that a clear channel can change everything.

You can usually go into your router settings and change your Wi-Fi channel.

Invest In A New Router

Another option is to invest in a new router that will be stronger and better. In general, you want to replace your router every five to seven years. This will help you to have the strongest possible connection while keeping everything secure.

Older equipment doesn’t always function as well. Your new router will be stronger, better, and faster, which will help everything.

Living in an apartment is fun and it’s a great way to save money, but you also need to have internet. It makes up so much of what we do in the world today, and your internet service provider needs to provide you with good broadband management and service.
