What is the Milad un Nabi?

The term Milad un Nabi (birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad) in Urdu means the birthday celebration of Prophet Muhammad. It is the day he was born, and it is celebrated with enthusiasm and with religious zeal.

In the month of Rabi ul Awal, several courses are celebrated around the world by Muslims. One of the most important of those courses is the Milad un Nabi celebration. Most Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad was born in the month of Rabi ul Awal on the day of 12 Rabi ul Awal, and he received his instructions from Allah, the almighty, on that occasion. Therefore, this day is observed as the celebration of Milad-un Nabi.

Why is the Milad un Nabi celebrated?

Milad un Nabi marks the birthday of the last messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (SAWW), who sacrificed himself for the sake of Allah. Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) is the previous living messenger of Allah & his message was very important as it is evident from the world; it is filled with injustice and bloodshed. Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) is known to be a great ummah’s peace lover. Indeed, it is great news for the whole world if a person has preached peace in the world, but how can the information be good if there is no peace in the world.

When is the Milad un Nabi celebrated?

The first day of Rabi ul Awal begins at ‘Eid Mubarak’ (Friday) and concludes at ‘Eid Milad-un Nabi’ (Monday).

Why are we celebrating Rabi ul Awal?

Ramadan is observed from the 1st of March till the 15th of May (43 days) in the lunar calendar, and Milad un Nabi starts from the 1st day of Rabi ul Awal till the last day of Rabi ul Awal. Milad un Nabi is the day on which the birth of the Holy Prophet was celebrated. This event was narrated from his mother, Hajrah bint Khalid who was transmitted to us in a hadith from Al-Nasaheb ibn Abi Madinah. The date given is exactly the 21st day of Rajab 613 A.H., on the 30th day of the month of Dhul Qa’da, 967 A.D.

Traditions to Celebrate Milad un Nabi

– The childless woman is kindly requested to make several preparations to welcome the child.

– The wife of the beloved husband prepares different kinds of foods to invite the guest.

– One of the points of emphasis is to distribute gifts among your family members and friends so that they may share the joy with you.

– Show your concern about the impoverished and needy in your neighborhood.

– Donate money to those poor and deserving persons.

– Give away charity to needy and sick people.

– Praise God Almighty and make tasbeeh.

– Avoid negative acts such as cursing, lying and abusing others, and spending unnecessary time arguing with them.

The Significance of this Celebration

The people of the Qu’ran said that God would hand over a heavy burden on the Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) so that he could uphold it well. This burden was fasting during Ramadan. He also advised them to remain patient. The Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) advised the people to stay patient for 30 days.

It is that time when Allah has instructed us to offer sacrifices to Him, pray to Him frequently, and spend on that which he will approve (i.e., charity, so on and so forth). Therefore, this is the best month of the year to do it.

The Qur’an in the Life of Prophet Muhammad

[Surah Al-Baqarah – Verse 37]

“And We sent him (Prophet Muhammad) among you when We said, “He should not be overbearing upon you in anything, but should advise you regarding what is best for you.”

[Surah Al-Anbiya – Verse 4]

“And We decreed for him (Prophet Muhammad) what will best support you, And We granted him and his companion’s patience and good conduct, and said: “Do not transgress.” And We said, “When you have attained to better knowledge concerning that, then after a time Allah will bring the revelation in it.”

[Surah Al-Mumtahinah – Verse 70]

“O humanity, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you might find each other so that you might know one another. Indeed, the most good to each other. And surely Allah is aware of what you do.”
