Plug-in is a computer program, which provides a specific and sometimes atypical function after registering themselves with a host application. WordPress GPL site has taken the bar up a notch by allowing users to host any new plug-ins written by third-party developers
Many third-party developers bring different plug-ins for different purposes. But often, their work is ignored because of the lack of a platform to display their plug-ins. These are all things from the past. WordPress has its own plug-in directory where users will be able to upload their own plug-in with an auto-update able subscription repository after filling out the required forms.
The plug-in should be placed in the trunk directory of the repository and tagged properly. WordPress imports plug-ins directly from the subscriber’s supplied information from the subscriber’s subscription repository. All plug-ins must be WordPress GPL site or a general public license compatible so as to avoid complications arising from the release of similar software previously released.
Working with WordPress, users get the benefit of knowing how their software is being received by other Internet users. WordPress often updates its directories and keeps a track of the number of people downloading certain software or how it is rated against all other software in the depository.
WordPress currently has a directory consisting of 7,533 plug-ins, downloaded 64,737,723 times! It is beneficial for third-party developers who want to market their plug-ins for free.
There is also another category of plugins that are not listed in the directory, paid plugins. These are more attractive from a marketing point of view as most of these paying plugins offer very strong marketing features. These are powerful SEO tools, range from user retention and dynamic popup engines.
If you are running a WordPress installation, there are two must-have plugins that you can’t just afford not to download.
Should WordPress consider other database options?
It doesn’t just have thousands of themes and plugins, but it’s free open-source software. Many websites use WordPress GPL site more as a content management system than just a blogging platform.
Currently, WordPress only works with database software called MySQL. It helps organize posts, tags, categories, and other information on WordPress. WordPress will not work at all without MySQL. This entire open source project depends on continuing this database.
Oracle sun recently acquired Micro system’s MySQL so a new company has the right to the software. Oracle said it would keep MySQL under general public license so it didn’t need to worry. Nevertheless, the thought arises that important software like MySQL could be acquired by a company at any time and shut down from WordPress.
This means WordPress GPL site should look at supporting other possible database options. There are fully open-source database solutions that can be considered. This will give WordPress users an option among MySQL and others. Those who may feel uncomfortable living on their site in a portion of software owned by someone else may be more relaxed.
Other database options may also have other options for WordPress. Other database options can push the limits of what WordPress can really do. It will also open up choices for users. Many have no other way to use the alternative database as it has not yet been given. In the future, it seems that it would be best for the platform to keep it as open as possible.
Currently, there is no need to worry since Oracle is playing nice about staying within the WordPress GPL site. It’s just a consideration for the future to have more options for the users.
