In the religious context, Sayee is the ritual of minor as well as Hajj pilgrimage during which pilgrims walk between Safah and Marwah hills in a particular manner, a total of seven times. Such that the first round of Sayee starts from Safah to Marwah, while the seventh round must end at the hill of Marwah.
Where Sayee is observed?
Sayee is performed between the hills of Safah and Marwah present in Makkah. Both of these small hills are present within the premises of Masjid-al-Haram.
Historical Significance.
The reason for performing the ritual of Sayee between Safah and Marwah by the pilgrims is the commemoration of the great event of Islamic history. Bibi Hajra, the wife of Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), who with her infant son Hazrat Ismail (AS) was left alone on the desert mountains of Safa and Marwah by Prophet Ibrahim (AS), as per the will and command of Allah Almighty.
With their minimal provisions spent, Bibi Hajra, alone and desperate, went looking for water and food for her crying son Hazrat Ismail (AS). She left the infant alone on the ground and kept running to and fro seven times between the two mountains of Safa and Marwah, in search of help from a caravan that might pass by. She first climbed the hill of Safa and then went to the other hill of Marwah to look around. In the same way, Bibi Hajra traveled seven times between these hills in the harsh blistering heat, before returning to her son.
Bibi Hajra was helpless and lonely, crying and praying to Allah Almighty to save her son Hazrat Ismail (AS) from this situation. Consequently, Allah Almighty answered her prayers and sent Hazrat Jibril (AS) for help. Hazrat Jibril (AS) struck the ground with his wing and by the will of Allah Almighty, a spring emerged known as the ‘ZamZam Well’. This was an answer to her prayers and a reward for succeeding in the test with obedience and patience.
Allah Almighty mentions in the Holy Quran; (description) Indeed, the hills of Safah and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So, whoever makes Hajj to the House i.e., Holy Kaabah, or performs Umrah; there’s no blame upon him for walking between them (Sayee). (Surah al-Baqarah 2:158)
