Amid all the twisted satin knots that adorn “Fifty Shades Darker”, none is as worth untangling as the tangled absurdities of its dominator, Christian Gray.
It’s a singularly ridiculous cocktail of money, abs, and sex toys. “The correct term is a sadist,” he says himself in “Fifty Shades Darker,” the second film in a trilogy based on the popular EL James erotic novels.
Gray buys her companies, flies helicopters, knows how to use nipple clips. It’s like a mix of James Bond and Dirk Diggler, both handsome and dirty, but lacking in humor. Other more plausible male fantasy figures include the Backstreet Boys and Roger Rabbit.
“Fifty Shades Darker” delves into the demons and traumas of Mr. Gray, played by Jamie Dornan. Much of the fun in the movie is watching Dakota Johnson, as the comparatively normal Anastasia “Ana” Steele, trying to perform alongside a twisted hunk who wakes up to work out on a gymnastic rack and who knows every groomer in town. Seattle Occasionally she implores him to stop acting so weird, but not enough.
Then we get to know a bit about his past and this leads to some of the funniest moments of accidental humor in the movie. In his childhood room we see a photograph of a Christian teenager in front of the Taj Mahal and surprisingly a poster for “The Chronicles of Riddick”. The poster remains in the background of an important scene, and the questions it raises linger long afterward. Is it a key that Christian is a fan of Vin Diesel? Was it a passing treat, or is Christian – that world-traveling sexual enigma – equally excited for the next installments of “Riddick”? We will never really discover Grey’s mysteries.
“Fifty Shades Darker,” which maintains a lily-white palette despite the title, picks up on the action three weeks after the end of the previous film. After their separation, Christian tries to reconcile with Ana by promising that he is ready for a more “vanilla” relationship, after the violence of his carnal desires scared her. “I want to renegotiate the terms,” he tells her, definitely speaking like a human being.
The couple quickly get back to their old ways. He showers, climbs into elevators, showers again. The sex scenes are a bit hotter and Johnson and Dornan’s statuesque bodies are up to the job. But the point of view changes a bit.
Director James Foley (“Glengarry Glen Ross”, “At Close Range”) took the reins from Sam Taylor-Johnson, who had clashes with James. While the author wanted the tapes to fully adhere to her, ahem, prose, Taylor-Johnson had the guts to try to improve it and achieved partial success. “Fifty Shades of Gray” (“Fifty shades of Gray”) was better than expected.
The same cannot be said for “Fifty Shades Darker,” the kind of movie that only makes you laugh at its failed dramatic attempts. Not only was Taylor-Johnson replaced, the script was written by James’s husband, Niall Leonard. In the end, it is a sequence of erotic simulations interrupted with melodramatic decorations that arrive (and are quickly dismissed) as unwanted guests in a room. An abusive boss (Eric Johnson) plays a (mediocre) villain for Controller Christian. A figure from the past (an underused Kim Basinger) warns Ana that her boyfriend will only be content with total obedience.
Movies have been so devoid of sex in recent years that one wishes one could support the light eroticism of “Fifty Shades.” But Foley has been dispatched with a key element of relationships, romp, and stifles conventionally filmed sex scenes with music. An encounter is wrapped up in one of the most questionable aphrodisiacs: Van Morrison.
The real dominating force here is, as in the previous tape, Johnson and the throbbing fluctuations in Ana’s heart. Why then does “Fifty Shades of Gray” belong to Christian? The movie doesn’t stop at Ana’s experience; she spends most of the film defending herself against Christian’s psychology. Ana, who works in the publishing industry, says she is drawn by Emily Bronte and Jane Austen, but we never see her reading a book. But she’s the one who should be in control.
Taking this into account, “Fifty Shades Darker,” a Universal Pictures premiere, takes one and a half stars out of four.
