Being a special education teacher is a tough job, with a lot of responsibilities. In addition, an educator must have a large amount of knowledge about the teaching and learning process to be effective. In this piece, we will look at questions that an effective special education teacher should be able to answer.

What are Integrated Teaching Methods?

These take elements from both direct and indirect teaching methods. The teacher starts off having primary control, and as the students (manners for kids) become increasingly competent, the teacher slowly relinquishes control into their hands.

What is a Learning Style?

This refers to the style and methods that will best enable a student to learn the information they are being taught.

What is a Learning Disability?

This is under development in a certain skill area that makes learning difficult for students. For a learning difficulty to be considered a learning disability, it has to be caused by a neurological disorder, and the student must have an average or above-average IQ. If the student’s IQ is below average, then they are classified as intellectually or developmentally disabled (IDD).

This means their intelligence level is below average, making it difficult for them to learn at a normal pace. Students that have learning disabilities don’t have a problem learning as much as a problem learning at the normal or expected speed. Common examples of learning disabilities include ADHD, autism, OCD, dyslexia etc. Learning disabilities are usually related to attention problems, memory problems, reading or speaking problems, etc. There are alternative teaching methods and strategies that are effective for educating students with learning disabilities.

What is the Cultural Deficit Theory?

This theory suggests that the linguistic, cultural, and social impact that the home environment has on students makes it difficult for them to adequately prepare for the academic activities they will be performing in school. Some home environments provide the necessary education and instill the necessary skills that students will need in school. Skills such as reading and writing are necessary for academic success, and some kids who come from homes where they are not taught these skills are at a disadvantage when they have to exist in the same academic space with other students who were given the opportunity to develop the skills (project based learning) they need to thrive at school.

What is a Block Grant?

This is a means for education funding that involves the payment of federal government monies to the state in a “block,” instead of getting designated to specific programs or purchases.

What is Categorical Aid?

Categorical aid is a means of federal educational funding where monies (google classroom)  are given to specific federal programs or services and are only to be used for the intended goals of the donation. The federal programs or services that receive categorical aid are required to make periodic reports on their use of the funds.

What is the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model?

A model of sheltered instruction formulated from thorough research. With this model, English language learners can better understand academic content while working on becoming an expert at speaking, writing, and reading the language.

What is Presentation Accommodation? 

This refers to an adjustment made in the methods and materials (advantages and disadvantages of e-learning) used to teach a learner in order to help them access relevant content through non-visual or auditory means.

 What is a Procedural Requirement?         

This is a requirement that is aimed at making certain that the processes involved in the implementation of the IEP (America’s Largest Colleges and Universities) are strictly followed.

What is Promising Practice?       

This refers to a behavioral practice that is known to be effective but has not been proven to a satisfactory degree due to there not being enough studies on it.

What is a Pull-In Program?

These are educational programs that are provided to learners with disabilities within a classroom setting. Often in these situations, a special education teacher works with the general education teacher to deliver effective instruction. This is also known as inclusive education (homeschooling) .

What is a Pull-Out Program?     

This involves the provision of educational services, outside of the classroom, to learners who are disabled. This is used to provide a more personalized education that is tailored to suit the needs of learners with disabilities.
