He was born on December 11, 1997, in Scottsdale, Arizona, United States. Matthew was born in Scottsdale, but he grew up in St. Louis Sub. He went to a preparatory school at Chaminade before joining the United States Hockey League.
Matthews’s younger brother Brad is a professional player in ice hockey too. He is competing for the Ottawa Senators at present. He also won a bronze medal in the 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships while playing for the United States.
Matthew was chosen in the 2016 NHL entry draft to appear for the Calgary flames. His position in the NHL entry draft was sixth overall.

Matthews’s hockey career started in 2010. He started playing for the St. Louis Blues junior ice hockey team during the time of the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Championship.
